Job Title: Certified Peer Specialist FLSA: Non-Exempt

Supervisor: OCRP Supervisor/Master Subject Matter Expert

Job Summary: Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) provides peer support services; serves as an individual advocate; provides person’s enrolled in the Outpatient Competency Restoration Program (OCRP) information and peer support for people determined by the court as not competent to stand trial and assist in their own defense and are appropriate for community-based services. This program works closely with the Health Care Authority as well as DSHS Forensic Navigators in regaining control over their own lives and over their own recovery process. The CPS will role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills.


Essential Job Duties:

1. Maintain client and staff confidentiality at all times.

2. Have legible handwriting.

3. Be able to do simple mathematics.

4. Be able to read and comprehend agency/client charts.


Specific Duties Required of Certified Peer Specialist:


1. Upon OCRP enrolled persons requests:


a. Assist in articulating personal goals for recovery.

b. Assist in determining the objectives needed to take to reach recovery goals.


2. Upon request the CPS will assist in:


a. Determining “Problems and Barriers” in current life situation.

b. Identify “Recovery Goals” as they relate to “Problems and Barriers.”

c. Determine interventions based on the OCRP enrolled persons recovery/life goals.

d. Observing progress OCRP enrolled persons make toward meeting objectives.

e. Understanding and utilizing specific interventions necessary to assist

in meeting recovery goals.


3. Utilizing the CPS specific training the CPS will:


a. Assist in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups.

b. Assist in creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP).

c. Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with OCRP enrolled persons and groups.

d. Teach OCRP enrolled persons to identify and combat negative self-talk.

e. Teach OCRP enrolled persons how to identify and overcome fears.

f. Support the vocational choices OCRP enrolled persons make and assist in overcoming job-related anxiety.

g. Assist OCRP enrolled persons in building social skills in the community that will enhance job acquisition and tenure.

h. Assist in identifying program environments that are conducive to recovery; lend their own unique insight into mental illness and what makes recovery possible.

i. Attend treatment team meetings to promote use of self-directed recovery tools.


4. Utilizing their unique recovery experience the CPSs will:


a. Teach and role model the value of recovery experience.

b. Assist OCRP enrolled person in obtaining decent and affordable housing of his or her choice in the most integrated, independent, and least intrusive or restrictive environment.

c. Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.


5. Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, journals, and other relevant material.


a. Continue to develop and share recovery-oriented material with other CPS’s at the continuing education assemblies and on the CPS electronic bulletin board.

b. Attend continuing education assemblies when offered by the CPS Project.

c. Attend relevant seminars, meetings, and in-service trainings whenever offered.


6. Serve as a recovery agent by:


a. Providing and advocating for effective recovery-based services.

b. Assist in obtaining services that suit that OCRP enrolled person’s recovery needs.

c. Inform OCRP enrolled persons about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process.

d. Assist OCRP enrolled persons in developing empowerment skill through self-advocacy and stigma-busting.


7. Perform assigned duties which include but are not limited to:


a. Reads daily log and documents after each shift, informs other peer support day program staff of any potential emergency situations (i.e. maintenance problems, medical/mental status).

b. Chart relevant daily interaction with clients within the peer support day program and/or support groups which provide support and assess their progress.


8. Attend scheduled staff meetings and community meetings when on duty and/or as assigned.


9. Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.
  • Current home phone/address.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record in order to use agency vehicles.
  • Documentation of personal insurance in order to use personal vehicle for member transport and to use agency vehicle
  • Agree to permit Criminal Conviction Inquiry.
  • Be free of substance abuse.
  • A working knowledge and adherence to all agency policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion and graduation from the Washington State Peer Counselor training or approval by Health Care Authority.
  • Experience with target population or ability to acquire specialized training to work with target population.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
