Job Description: Certified Medication Aide/ CNA

Reports to: Director of Nursing Services

Department: Nursing Classification: Hourly (non-exempt)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or other medical staff and is responsible for assisting nurses by following written and/or oral instructions to administer medications and document drug dosages and times of administration. Additionally, the CMA takes vital signs, assists in examinations and treatments, and assists patients with activities of daily living. The CMA must monitor patients to report changes in the patients’ conditions.

  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments as defined by state regulations in accordance with company policy and procedure under the direction of a licensed nurse
  • A CMA may not:
  • Administer the first dose of a new medication or a previously prescribed medication if the dosage is changed.
  • Any new medication that arrives from the pharmacy without ensuring that it reflects the original prescriptions.
  • As-needed medications
  • Counting of controlled substances
  • Any medication delivered by needle or by intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intrathecal and intraosseous routes.
  • Administration of medication that must be inserted into a nasogastric tube or gastric tube.
  • Changing oxygen settings or turning oxygen on or off.
  • Administer an inhalant medication.
  • Regulate intravenous fluids or the programming of insulin pumps.
  • Administer topical patches or topical medications that require a sterile dressing or assessment of skin condition.
  • Administer sublingual medications.
  • Administer any medication that requires a mathematical conversion between units of measurement to determine the correct dose.
  • Verifies identity of resident receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on resident’s chart.
  • Takes vital signs or observes resident to detect response to specified types of medications and prepares report or notifies designated personnel of unexpected reactions.
  • Records, reorders and restocks medication inventories.
  • Gives and/or assist in direct resident care such as bathing, dressing, feeding residents, assisting in examinations and treatments as applicable.
  • Assists Nurse Aides during meal times with tray passing, picking up trays and feeding as applicable.
  • Responds to call lights in a timely manner.
  • Monitors for effectiveness of PRN medications (non-narcotic) and reports and documents outcomes to licensed nurse.
  • Provides assistance to charge nurses with the cleanliness of the nursing station, medication room, and supply room.
  • Attends periodic in-services and staff meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of State Approved Medication Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Medication Aide certification from the state board of nursing

Other Specific Requirements

  • Must provide evidence of being free of tuberculosis infection upon hire and as set forth by the policies of the facility.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decision when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in office area(s) as well as throughout the nursing service area (i.e. nurse’s stations, resident rooms, etc.).
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Interacts with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary. May be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
  • Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without the aid of mechanical devices):

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental emotional and stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which may include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Requires infrequent lifting of more weight up to 50 pounds. Occasional pushing and pulling of carts.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Salary: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
