BWXT is currently seeking a Nuclear Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!


BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.


The Nuclear Engineer will work as part of a high-performing, innovative, and multi-disciplinary team employing an integrated approach for neutronics, thermal hydraulics, mechanical/stress, and safety analysis, to achieve accelerated reactor design development. Source term estimation, shielding, and radiation analysis will also be performed.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Perform neutron transport calculations in support of the design and development of novel advanced reactor designs.
  • Support development of core neutronics modeling and simulation tools and methods.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary team, providing data/requirements to other disciplines and receiving data/requirements from them.
  • Perform radiation transport simulations for nuclear criticality, radiation shielding analyses, neutron activation, and radiation-induced material impact assessments.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. A degree in Nuclear Engineering is preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of related experience. Reactor physics analysis supporting core design experience is preferred.
  • Experience with shielding and activation in addition to core design is preferred.
  • Must have demonstrable neutronics analysis skills using core design and analysis codes and tools (e.g., MCNP, SCALE).
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple engineering disciplines across joint organizational teams.
  • Must have knowledge in nuclear reactor phenomena, neutronic calculations, and modeling and simulation tools.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to write and deliver high quality technical reports and documentation, including presentations to customers, regulators, and other organizations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, PC and Linux computing is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
