Overview

The Mining engineer provides technical expertise, support, training and leadership to the underground mine. The two primary functions of the Mining engineer role are Deposit management and Comminution/Sizing. Although the mine has no formal external customers, the mining engineers ensure that their internal customer’s needs are satisfied.

Requirements

  • BS in Mining Engineering, BS in Geology, BS in Geological Engineering, or closely related engineering field is required.
  • Co-op or Internship highly recommended
  • Functional/technical knowledge and/or experience commensurate to the role/job
  • Can utilize project management and other engineering tools to optimize project execution.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to make engineering generalizations from one process/problem to another with
minimal supervision.

  • Capability to independently support related areas of responsibility with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all functional groups and through several levels of the organization.
  • Interest in and commitment to teamwork and team-based systems.
Essential Functions

Operational Effectiveness

  • Mine Plan
o Utilize DDH data and modeling software to build and maintain block model of deposit

o Perform Mine Plan reviews on a Quarterly basis

o Lead the Quality Pillar in both Drill Blast Scale and Kiln feed departments

o Trouble shooting

o Regulatory & Standard compliance

o Proactive process monitoring / analysis / adjustment

o Minimize process variability via Six Sigma and OPeX

o Training of manufacturing personnel.

o Maintain documentation to support technical and regulatory systems

o Lead and implement small technical projects

  • Support Capital Project work
o New equipment installation

o Equipment replacement

o PHA/PSSE Projects

  • Meets and Exceeds customer expectations
Providing Direction

  • Participate in prioritization of work based upon occupational and process safety, production, rate of return and regulatory requirements.
  • Design, develop and implement data collection and analysis systems which accurately reflect the performance of the material flow
  • Develop functional standards, systems and procedures
  • Utilize information systems to capture and facilitate use of organizational memory
  • Provide information to Engineering manager and Mine manager for budgeting material and variable usages and capital expenditures.
People Development

  • Build technical trouble shooting skills in manufacturing personnel.
  • Assist in management of external resources
  • Develop capability within operators - Provide technical expertise and training for operations
  • Identify and address gaps in manufacturing personnel capabilities
  • Develops systems to train and transfer support of plant requirements to operators and supervisors to improve operating discipline in order to begin cost savings/improvement projects.
  • Does NOT continue to perform daily support of plant requirements without developing systems to transfer the work to operators and supervisors when appropriate.
Health, Safety & Environment

  • Adherence to site safety, environment and health policies and standards
  • Abide by site standards, policies and principles
  • Audit all policies and standards
  • Supports/completes site wide safety audits.
  • Ensures personal compliance with all plant SPs
  • Ensures product and process compliance with all MSHA requirements.
Collaborating and Networking

  • Effectively communicate and direct manufacturing personnel to improve current and future performance of process. This includes constant, ongoing communication with:
o Mine Management and supervision

o Surface customers and supervisors

o Engineering Manager

o Laboratory

o Environmental Department

o Hourly Workforce

  • Constantly assesses whether there is a better way for manufacturing personnel to perform their tasks.
  • Network with other engineers on site for best practices, technology upgrades and consistent application of engineering codes and standards.
  • Collaborates on local product strategies with Manufacturing Coordinators, engineers and maintenance team.
  • Does NOT think or act territorially about their job.
METRICS/RESULTS

  • Budgeting of raw material usages and tracking performance
  • Tracks and Evaluates Specific Energy Consumption of Operations
  • Budget of capital projects within product group and tracking of performance
