The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


The purpose of this position is:

Perform quality dimensional and visual inspection of precision machined components by using various measuring devices to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Verify dimensional conformance of small precision-machined components using various inspection instruments (CMMs, optical comparators, Keyences, and other gages).
  • Read and interpret production travelers and engineering drawings/specifications to ensure product and process conformance.
  • Document dimensional part characteristics and measurements to support CNC production when performing hourly checks, first article inspections and other inspection sequences.
  • Determine quality (Pass/Fail) of manufactured parts based on dimensional and visual inspection.
  • Record data from inspection history cards or inspection files and maintain accurate and legible inspection records.
  • Verify production process and create product discrepant material reports in the quality database.
  • Utilize computer programs to search for various inspection recipes and apply them.
  • Maintain safety, cleanliness and quality standards by using acceptable housekeeping practices on equipment and work area.
  • Learning the elements of programming these inspection devices.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to work with and understand technical devices, as well as programming.
  • Ability to understand technical drawings (specifically to interpret measurements and tolerances).
  • General understanding of Coordinate Measuring Machines or vision inspection systems.
  • Working knowledge of Keyence IM, LM, VR, or VK systems, programming knowledge preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Nikon, OGP or Zeiss CMMs, programming knowledge preferred.
  • High Computer Literacy required.
  • GD&T background desirable, SME preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Working at an inspection device with fixtures, small parts, tools, and a microscope for most of the shift.
  • Occasional work with CNC operators and Machining Engineers to support experiments and production.

Education:

  • High School or General Education Diploma

Experience:

  • 1 year of Direct or transferable experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Aerospace industry 1 - 3 years
  • Keyence experience (1 yr)
