Overview: The Medical Assistant is responsible for preparing patients for their office visit to include obtaining and documenting vital signs and medical history. The Medical Assistant will perform lab duties as required and cross train with Patient Service Representatives for essential job functions.


This position in an intermittent position in ON-CALL STATUS.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work directly with Providers to support patient visits (pre-visit prep, visit, and post-visit activities)
  • Assist in population health management, quality improvement, and quality assurance activities.
  • Understand and apply principles of aseptic technique and University Precautions for infection control.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA, PPI regulations, and SVTHW policies and procedures.
  • Prepare patient for exams, procedures, and treatments.
  • Obtain chief complaint, provide basic screening tests and collect vital signs.
  • Assist with exams, procedures, and treatment as required
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies
  • Coordinate patient car information with providers.
  • Send letters to patients with laboratory, radiology, and procedure results as directed.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and co-workers.
  • Clean, stock, and maintain patient care areas, equipment, lobby, and laboratory, Clean, package, and sterilize supplies and instruments
  • Maintain clinical supply inventory
  • Collect and process lab specimens and CLIA-waived diagnostic tests
  • Perform requirements for OSHA and CLIA compliance such as refrigerator temperatures, lab quality assurance tests, autoclave spore tests, etc.
  • Perform basic clerical functions
  • Participate in orientation of new staff
  • Assist in making patient referrals and patient follow-up as directed.
  • Conduct patient education as directed.
  • Be proficient with MA competencies and skillsets as outlined for work performed.
  • Complete basic radiology training.
  • Project a professional manner and image, adhering to ethical principles.
  • Actively participate in one of the SVTHW committees as assigned by Management.

Specifications

  • Must possess understanding of human anatomy and medical terminology
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at a time
  • Must possess great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must possess ability to work cooperatively and productively in a team environment and enjoy working in a health care setting.
  • Experience in radiology
  • Experience with injectable medications
  • Ability to meet or exceed the physical demands listed under Physical Demands
  • Annual TB testing provided by SVT

Job Requirements

  • Education - High School Diploma or GED required
  • Experience - 1+ years related experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • Certifications and Licensure - MA Certification or Community Health Aide Certification preferred. Will consider LPN, EMT, or CNA. Phlebotomy Certification strongly preferred. CPR Certification required -but may be provided or updated by SVT.
  • Computer Skills - Must be proficient in both Mac and PC. Ability to perform clinical computing requirements to include electronic health records (EHR), telepharmacy, and telemedicine. Ability to use e-mail, internet browsers, and Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
  • Travel Requirements - Travel may be required between Homer, Seldovia, and Anchor Point by car, boat, or plane. Travel is subject to inclement weather and may result in overnighting.
  • Pre-employment/Employment Requirements - Background check, Drug Testing, and FBI Fingerprinting required.

SVT Health & Wellness Care Teams partner with patients to provide the care they want and need. The Care Team works together and with the patient to ensure patients receive follow-up care, annual well exams and indicated preventative care and screenings. Members of the Care Team support each other to provide patient care and essential follow up.

Our Care Team is comprised of the following positions. The involvement of team members varies depending on each patient’s need during any particular episode of care.
