Responsibilities:

Arcfield is seeking a senior mechanical and aerospace engineer to support our strategic programs work in Colorado Springs. Arcfield has supported our U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) customer by performing research, development, analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing to assess weapon system performance and qualify weapon systems for normal and hostile environments. We provide support in the areas of programmatic and systems engineering, engineering and scientific analysis, and operational systems support for Navy SSP’s strategic reentry systems. We utilize both COTS and in-house developed software to deliver analysis results and software models of reentry systems and weapons effects to Navy SSP.


The mechanical and aerospace engineer level III will be responsible to provide technical analysis of reentry system performance in hostile and normal reentry environments. This analysis can include modeling the environments as well as analyzing complex materials and structures; dynamic response of structures subjected to hypersonic aerodynamic loads and system responses to thermal and shock environments. The winning candidate will guide the development, testing and evaluation of aerospace materials; develop mechanical finite element models; use modeling and simulation tools to assess material response and system design performance.
  • Complete vehicle performance evaluations in hostile and atmospheric reentry environments with advanced computer modeling techniques
  • Work with local team and support work with external collaborators and DoD customer to assess performance against system requirements
  • Write plans, reports, and presentations
  • Present results to DoD customer and external reviewers
  • Travel to meetings at national laboratories and customer sites
Career level with a complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts. Working under only general direction, provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Bachelor's (or equivalent) with 5 - 7 years of experience, or a Master's and 3 to 5 years of experience. Responsible for providing guidance and expertise in mechanical engineering to design complex mechanical equipment and systems, and to investigate, evaluate and develop new applications for existing equipment and systems. Determines theoretical principles involved and applying advanced analytical and investigative methods and techniques. Analyzes assigned tasks to provide estimates of manpower and material required to complete. Prepares schedules for accomplishing tasks within estimates. Supervises and coordinates technicians in fabrication and installation of complex mechanical and related electronic equipment and systems. May direct field operation and maintenance activities of mechanical equipment/systems installations. Evaluates operational systems and designs modification to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements. Develops new applications requiring appreciable originality and ingenuity, and complex test procedures for equipment and systems which are significantly different from existing designs. Plans, organizes and conducts the development of each assignment; coordinates manpower assigned to each activity and coordinates the activities of group involved in various stages of overall program to ensure effective integration. Provides technical guidance to personnel involved with producing design fabrication drawings. Reviews and corrects drawings to ensure proper engineering techniques and required specification have been utilized. Develops, releases and maintains documentation in accordance with company and contractual requirements. Reviews, writes and edits reports such as evaluation plans, test results, technical manuals, etc. to provide recommendations, conclusions, and other data.
Qualifications:
Required:

BS 5-7 Years, MS 3-5, PhD 0-2
  • Experience with developing and running advanced computer models
  • Experience with writing plans and reports; experience with briefing technical results
  • Experience with data analysis and statistical modeling methods
  • Ability to travel to support meetings with customer and potential testing
Preferred:
  • Advanced graduate level degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science, physics, or related technical field
  • Experience in the nuclear weapons complex (either DoD or DOE)
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Experience with Finite Element Modeling (FEM)
  • Experience with engineering analysis codes and techniques
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Experience with Matlab and Python
  • Ability to work independently or on a team
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
