A Baltimore Law Firm is seeking a Marketing Director. The Marketing Director will: Lead the firm in marketing, public relations, and communications, and assist in new business development and client / referral retention; Develop strategic and formalized marketing initiatives that support the firm’s goals to increase awareness and raise visibility; Deliver high quality programming and resources to all attorneys and practices; and Work closely with firm leadership on overall marketing and business development efforts at the firm, practice, and individual attorney level. The role is 1 day in office and 4 days remote. This can be a 30 or 40 hour work week depending on candidate preference.

What You'll Do:

  • In coordination with firm leadership, develop, implement, and monitor long- and short-term marketing and business development initiatives.
  • Apprise firm leadership of marketing performance against the plan and budget.
  • Oversee and ensure the quality of all marketing communications -- that they are consistent with the strategy, brand, reputation, and high standards of the firm.
  • Lead website strategy and draft content. Develop optimization strategies that increase the firm's search engine results rankings. Research metadata to use throughout the firm's website and marketing materials. Write compelling and high-quality website content, attorney resumes, and practice descriptions. Update content and website links for optimization. Monitor web traffic and adjust for SEO.
  • Develop and manage all internal and external communications programs and materials to raise the firm’s profile and enhance its reputation. Direct, manage, and publish marketing collateral, e-alerts, social media posts, advertisements, announcements, invitations, sponsorships, and client-facing material.
  • Manage new attorney marketing and business development onboarding, including initial strategy meeting, review of processes and resources, and external communications (media release, website, e-announcement, etc.).
  • Actively explore opportunities for article pitches and placement, backgrounding, and story sourcing.
  • Plan and manage the execution of external media, including public relations and social media activities related to the firm, practice areas, lawyer achievements, special events, community relations, breaking news, and crisis communications.
  • Monitor and measure social media activity for the firm and participating attorneys. Coach interested attorneys in use of social media for greater exposure.
  • Proactively identify and evaluate marketing opportunities including client-driven educational programs, seminars, and client appreciation events. Oversee concept development, logistical planning, production, and follow-up.
  • Proactively identify and secure opportunities for speaking engagements at relevant conferences, annual meetings, etc.
  • Work with firm leadership to coordinate the firm’s charitable involvement recognition and PR exposure.
  • Research trends in legal marketing and communicate findings to the firm leadership. Gather competitive intelligence and provide analysis of marketing strategies used by other law firms.
  • Maintain representative client lists and capabilities catalog of significant matters / engagements.
  • Identify appropriate lawyer ranking publications and prepare submissions for attorneys. Identify firm’s unrecognized attorneys and nominate.
  • Coordinate summer associate recruiting efforts.
  • Oversee the firm's outreach with primary university recruiting sources.
  • Organize recruiting events and receptions.
  • Prepare annual marketing plan, and develop marketing budget.
  • Work with practices and attorneys to create individual marketing and professional development plans. Ensure that the plans align with the firm’s overall business goals and includes clearly stated milestones. Regularly monitor the plans, support attorney efforts, track initiatives and progress.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to identify, qualify, track, and develop new business prospects. Work with attorneys and practices to track progress on lead cultivation. With attorneys, develop targeted prospect lists.
  • Provide strategic advice on new business pitches and proposals. With attorneys, collaborate on proposal strategy.
  • Provide research in preparation of prospect / client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for and take lead on RFP drafts.
  • Maintain firm-wide client / referral and prospect mailing lists.
  • Identify cross-marketing business development opportunities.

Job Requirements:

  • Four-year college degree required, preferably in marketing, communications, or journalism.
  • Minimum ten years of marketing experience in a professional services firm (law firm preferred) with a strong emphasis on writing and editing.
  • Familiarity with legal marketing communications and ethics requirements a plus.
  • Self-starter with a client-focused, client-service mentality. Highly service oriented, strong work ethic, and ability to work in an autonomous, entrepreneurial environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to define goals and follow through to achieve results; ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high level of sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Flexibility in working well within a team environment. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all members of the firm at all levels.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Proficient with social media.
