The Field Assistant works with the Senior Resource Educator on various citizen science-based educational projects and assists with various field and laboratory research projects. This includes serving as site coordinator for the volunteer horseshoe crab spawning surveys and assisting with shellfish aquaculture and other field restoration and education activities. Site Coordinators are responsible for collecting scientific data on annual horseshoe crab spawning surveys that occur 12-15 evenings in May and June (typically 2 hours per evening). Coordinators work in pairs as a team at their site to count, measure and tag spawning horseshoe crabs on the beach and to educate volunteer participants. Site Coordinators may also coordinate and lead other casual participants interested in a one-time educational experience about horseshoe crab and this program. This position will also assist with horseshoe crab telemetry-based fieldwork that is boat based and with data deployment/retrieval/maintenance, as well as with the shellfish aquaculture and groundwater programs (some Scuba diving or snorkeling may be needed for this work). The shellfish aquaculture program requires working with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist in the hatchery and the grow-out facility in Huntington (Goldstar Battalion). At Goldstar Battalion, they will assist with collecting data for shellfish and water quality and provide assistance with the maintenance of display tanks, FLUPSY grow-out of shellfish, and public education and outreach as needed. They will also assist with laboratory and field experiments for shellfish and groundwater projects.

Required Qualifications:
  • H.S. Degree or higher.
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Ability to work with others or alone with some supervision.
  • Knowledge of natural science, plant science, or marine science.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and handle heavy gear.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery – 10%
  • Assist in providing general educational outreach information for the public.
Applied Research – 30%
  • Assist with collecting scientific data for horseshoe crab surveys and acoustic telemetry, shellfish aquaculture and water quality, monitoring and recording water quality data, and collecting water samples for analysis (or other environmental measures).
Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination/Operation – 55%
  • Assist with the coordination of volunteers.
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of shellfish hatchery/FLUPSY and growout.
  • Assist with monitoring shellfish grow-out and other environmental field-related work, including groundwater sampling.
  • Assist the educator with the maintenance and upkeep of touch tanks and aquarium display tanks, including feeding fish and invertebrates, maintaining equipment, and cleaning culture equipment.
  • Assist with lab-based projects to record biological metrics and other sample processing.
  • Assist with coordinating and operating field equipment for all field projects, including data downloading, database updating, and telemetry projects.

  • In cooperation with Supervisor or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION DETAILS:
Salary: $16.03 -$35.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Schedule: Part-time/non-exempt (20 hours per week)
