About the Opportunity

The Manager of Community Enrichment will report to the Emily and Richard Smucker Chair for Education. This position works across Chautauqua Institution to plan, implement and supervise year-round lifelong learning classes within the organization’s in-person summer Special Studies program and growing year-round learning management system.

This position serves as the supervisor for numerous seasonal independent contractors and employees.

About Your Work

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight of Chautauqua’s Special Studies program to achieve key business and engagement goals
  • Lead all aspects of curriculum selection, program planning, operations, budget and hiring
  • Working with Chautauqua Institution’s Marketing and Communications Department, contribute to strategy to recruit and retain students, develop positive brand recognition for Special Studies and enter new markets
  • Working with cross-departmental executive staff members, provide strategic leadership and supervision regarding assessment of the Chautauqua Online Classroom (learning management system at learn.chq.org) to determine growth, return on investment, and risk potential to meet strategic business and engagement goals for the organization
  • Working with and in support of members of executive staff, identify new opportunities that meet community needs, grow revenue and increase enrollment through in-person and online classes

Curriculum Development

  • Utilizing the historic success of Special Studies and the opportunity for innovation presented by Chautauqua’s 150 Forward Strategic Plan, develop curricular vision and goals to guide course selection
  • Lead review of community proposals to determine annual portfolio of classes led by community instructors for multi-generational audiences
  • Work with key Institution staff to develop industry-specific programming and resources, such as fitness or arts classes
  • Support cross-departmental work teams in developing resources for internal training and continuing education
  • Develop and implement gap analysis process to determine areas of need and potential growth within classes, in-person and online
  • Actively recruit instructors and develop classes that have high ROI potential and are aligned to curricular goals for community enrichment classes
  • Assess class experience and content to ensure a high level of quality, consistency and value
  • Working with staff across organization, support the development of content for online classroom programs

Hiring/Personnel Oversight

  • Hire, train and manage Special Studies seasonal staff
  • Recruit, train and manage class monitors
  • Hire, train and manage part-time staff hired to support online classroom as necessary
  • Responsible for instructor development and retention for both Special Studies and online classroom
  • Evaluate instructors; provide coaching as necessary
  • Lead and participate in staff orientations

Operational Oversight

  • Support technical operation of live-streamed classes through direct facilitation or through development of cross-training opportunities
  • Process instructor payroll
  • Schedule classes and act as point person for facilities used primarily for Special Studies during the summer for internal and external use requests
  • Work with Marketing department on production of Special Studies catalog
  • Negotiate and finalize contracts for instructors
  • Lead customer service approach and support staff during challenging interactions
  • Address inefficiencies in customer and staff experience
  • Lead review and development of budget, including capital requests

About You

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent professional experience, with emphasis in education, community-based classes or business highly desired.

Experience

  • 5 years of related experience in strategic and organizational planning, supervision, program development and assessment preferred
  • Knowledge of current and future technologies, best practices and teaching methodologies in the areas of online learning and program development highly desired

  • Project management capabilities and initiative to navigate multiple projects, full cycle, simultaneously with experience planning, executing, controlling, closing, and assessing results
  • Technical savvy to utilize software and technology solutions organization-wide, including but not limited to Learning Management Systems, online web registration systems, social media platforms, financial reporting and budget management
  • Creative, innovative thinking and fluency of ideas to help lead strategic initiatives and be a key collaborator in business requirements analysis and data analysis methodologies to support all business objectives
  • Logic and reasoning to understand data structures, theories, principles, and practices to extract relevant information and apply that information to strategies for successful operations
  • Problem-solving capabilities to identify complex problems, use critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and relevant information to evaluate options, and develop appropriate, effective solutions
  • Relationship-building expertise and leadership disposition to provide direction or support across interworking teams. Consultative and collaborative approach to problem-resolution in teams
  • Self-starter who will be a dependable strategic partner focused on work that builds a foundation of process and procedure, accomplishes routine responsibilities, plans for the future, and meets shared strategic and business goals

  • Knowledge of curriculum development and assessment as it relates to continuing education industry standards
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication, both written and oral, with internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues, instructors, staff, program partners and patrons
  • Ability to provide training and guidance to employees
  • Ability to manage a year-round and summer intensive program with creative and strong entrepreneurial skills

About Your Compensation


Compensation for this opportunity starts at $56,000 and, with demonstrated experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $64,000/annual.
