Job Summary
The Streets Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing maintenance and repair of public facilities such as streets and sidewalks for the City of Deerfield Beach. The Streets Maintenance Worker works independently within established policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides unskilled to semi-skilled manpower in the repair and maintenance of streets facilities such as roads, sidewalks, and swales.
  • Cleans debris and vegetation from right-of-way and assists in the operation of the vac truck. Digs trenches and holes; mixes concrete; places riprap; lays pipe and installs roadway structures.
  • Performs sidewalk, gutter and driveway repair; removes broken or cracked sections, sets form, pours and finishes concrete.
  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment.
  • Operates a motor vehicle, cement mixer, and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains trees and removes brush to ensure streets and sidewalks are clear for public use.
  • Performs asphalt repair; potholes and sections of blacktop are extracted and repaired.
  • Maintains City property and Right of Ways; lawn and pesticide maintenance, removal of trash and other debris/litter. Responds timely to requests and work orders.
  • Performs general maintenance and cleaning of tools, materials, and workstations.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other division supervisors and staff, other City employees, and the general public.
  • Assists the Stormwater division with projects.
  • Performs after-hours/on-call rotation to respond to emergency repairs.
  • Assists other units/divisions as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Considered essential personnel in the event of a natural disaster.
  • Performs all work in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety, and consistent with the core values of the City, and consistent with City and Department policies.
  • Adheres to laws, regulations and policies of the City and of the assigned Department. Follows instructions provided by supervisor, Department Director or their designee.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Valid Florida Driver’s license with an acceptable driving history (must remain valid throughout employment).

Preferred Qualifications
Six (6) months of verifiable experience in construction, landscape, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers. Must be able to use and understand crew hand signals.
  • Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to determine time and weight.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using motor vehicles and machinery.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, tools, etc. Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. Worker may be subject to danger or risk to a significant degree.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, heavy equipment, and a variety of hand and power tools. Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, typically involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, driving, using hands to handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, climbing or balancing and reaching with hands and arms. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes (i.e. warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc.). The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the workers to shout in order to be heard above the surrounding noise level. The worker is subject to vibration: exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. The worker is subject to hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places or exposure to chemicals. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours Monday – Friday 6:30am – 5:00 pm (nights, weekends/holiday and emergencies as needed)

Emergency Management Responsibilities
Note: During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
