Performs advanced (journeyman-level) construction, restoration, renovation and maintenance work. Work involves building repair, renovation, restoration, making inspections, adjustments, installations, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, stationary equipment, operating motorized equipment, requisitioning material and supplies and maintaining records. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Essential Job Functions:
1.Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

2.Performs carpentry work such as the installation, alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, fixtures and equipment.

3.Estimate work hours and materials required for projects.

4.Will serve as the team supervisor on construction, maintenance and carpentry repair projects.

5.Performs inspections, adjusts maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards on building systems for various trades such as welding, carpentry, painting and plumbing to ensure proper maintenance and repair.

6. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.


Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1.Vocational training in the carpentry trade is preferred.

2.Knowledge of the repair, maintenance and operation of buildings and equipment; of building materials; and of carpentry procedures and techniques.

3.Knowledge of painting, plastering, brick laying, glass cutting, plumbing, and commercial lock installation and repair work.

4.Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, estimate materials, read work orders, interpret blueprints, drawings or sketches.

5.Ability to requisition materials and equipment and maintain records of materials used.

6.Ability to perform preventative maintenance programs; to apply proper methods; techniques and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.

7.Ability to supervise the work of others and assign the appropriate staff to oversee repairs or renovations needed.

8.Ability to process paperwork and maintain records on work orders, projects and material requisitions.

9.Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment.

10.Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with other members of the maintenance and facility team.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain one no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.


Initial Selection Criteria:
1.Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required; and/or supplemented by vocational training in carpentry.

2.Must have one (1) year in building maintenance and repair in carpentry work.
