Compensation: $15/hr - $18/hr plus benefits and time-off package

Position Summary

The Facilities & Maintenance Support helps to ensure the property is well maintained, functional, safe, and hospitable for all guests. Primarily responsible for weekly regular proactive maintenance, as well as supporting on maintenance projects as needed and skilled.

You will work closely with the Facilities Manager and Operations team, to help ensure campus, cabins, and houses are safe and well setup for guests. This role requires you to be primarily on-site at BBRC and may include housing as part of the compensation package, if required.

BBRC Overview

Big Bear Retreat Center is a residential retreat center that provides space for mindfulness, compassion, respite, and healing with the purpose of fostering individual and collective transformation and illuminating our interconnectedness with nature, one another, and society. We do this by offering a mix of silent multi-day residential Insight Meditation retreats, and by hosting / partnering with organizations supporting various communities including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, first responders, veterans, and mindfulness communities.

Big Bear Retreat Center is located a 2.5-hour drive from Los Angeles, nestled in the ancient Juniper forests of the San Bernardino Mountains at a 7,000-foot elevation (four mountain seasons) near the town of Big Bear Lake in Southern California. BBRC is immersed in nature located amidst about 100 acres of forested land with direct access to several hiking trails connected to the property. With an emphasis on inclusion and accessibility, our Center provides a refuge for people of all faiths and walks of life.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Preventative Maintenance of on-site and off-site properties: regular checks and maintenance of property weekly and in between retreats (see maintenance operations checklists for details) - property as a whole, cabins, shared buildings, and houses offsite
  • Regular upkeep and care of equipment weekly and as needed
  • Supports Facilities Manager as needed on other property maintenance and projects
  • Supports with seasonal care and preparations such asWinter snow removal (shoveling and blowing) immediately after snow, salting, and other snow care

Summer fire preparedness and precautions
Blowing and removing of pine needles across campus

  • Handles light maintenance repairs and requests as they come up, especially when Facilities Manager is not available
  • Supports other physical projects on campus such as digging, landscaping, etc.

Requirements:

  • Willingness to support and learn in maintenance and facilities
  • Physically capable of lifting 50 pounds
  • Experienced, or willing to learn, in safely operating and care of a variety of equipment, including snow blowers, lawn mowers, and small hand tools
  • Working knowledge of tools, common appliances, and devices
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills
  • Excellent manual dexterity and problem-solving skills
  • Able to work in a collaborative, team environment
  • Reliable in following directions and follow through tasks to completion

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of general maintenance processes and methods
  • Familiarity with retreat center or camp environments
  • Team player that can communicate professionally with team members and guests

Employee may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time (% of average workday):

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
