Job Summary

Coos Bay Rail Line, Inc. is hiring a Locomotive Electrician/Mechanic Apprentice to work under the guidance of the Locomotive Electrician to learn to inspect, repair, service and maintain the engine, and electrical and mechanical components of railroad locomotives.
The Locomotive Electrician/Mechanic Apprentice will be assigned applicable training courses and must complete the courses with passing grades.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), ODOT Rail, and Coos Bay Rail Line rules and regulations for safety and operations.
  • Under the guidance of the Locomotive Electrician, the Apprentice will:
  • Inspect and service the diesel locomotive and hyrail fleet in compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.
  • Diagnose, repair, replace, or rebuild diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other locomotive mechanical components.
  • Read, interpret, understand, and find written or electronic information, including information from diagrams, schematics, blueprints, graphs, and charts, and input information as needed into a computer.
  • Efficiently operate equipment including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes and overhead hoists).
  • Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in clean and safe order, and ensures all equipment and materials are available and ready for use.
  • Efficiently communicate technical information, job briefing information, job procedure recommendations and other work-related information with others verbally, through writing, email, telephone, or radio.
  • Keep supervisor informed of work progress and completion. Proactively seek next work assignments upon completion of previously assigned work.
  • Complete assigned applicable training courses with passing grades.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience & Education

  • Must have 2 years work experience as an electrician or mechanic repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, diesels OR current journeyman's mechanical card.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates Degree in an electrical or mechanical related field preferred.
  • Certified and/or licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and retain knowledge of motive power, rolling stock, and FRA and ODOT Rail regulations.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate hand and power tools and equipment without supervision.
  • Experience welding with current welding certificate or the ability to obtain.
  • Ability to make quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances.
  • Interpersonal/communication/customer service skills to effectively interact both verbally and in writing with coworkers, stakeholders, and customers, with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and customers and efficiently handle controversy.
  • Ability to work alone and in a team environment by developing and maintaining good working relationships with coworkers, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Understand and follow all company, state, federal, and industry safety rules, practices, and standards.
  • Knowledge of locomotive operations preferred.
  • Possess valid Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

  • Regional travel required.
  • Work is frequently performed outside during inclement weather conditions, and various hours.
  • May be subjected to high stress situations.
  • On call work as required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must utilize/wear personal protective equipment as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, reaching, reaching overhead, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Locations include: areas of elevation, vehicle and pedestrian traffic, enclosed and/or exposed outdoor environments, wet areas, over waterways and bridges, through/in tunnels, areas of uneven footing.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy hand tools and machinery.
  • Ability to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing.
