Position Summary

** This is a part-time position and employee may work variable hours including evenings and weekends for approximately 15 hours per week. No benefits are offered with this position with the exception of IPERS (where applicable) and Social Security.

POSITION PURPOSE
: Under the supervision of the Library’s Circulation Manager or Lead Library Assistant, compile records, and sort, shelve, issue, and receive library materials such as books, electronic media, pictures, cards, slides and microfilm; locate library materials for loan and replace material in shelving area, stacks, or files according to identification number and title; register patrons to permit them to borrow books, periodicals, and other library materials; perform routine manual and clerical work; and perform other duties as assigned. Employees work under direct supervision, although they may operate with some independence once procedures are learned, with occasional checks for adherence to prescribed standards.

Job Duties

JOB DUTIES :
  • Check in returned library materials.
  • Examine items for damage, missing pieces or other issues.
  • Pull reserved items.
  • Sort materials and products on carts for reshelving.
  • Accurately reshelve materials.
  • Maintain security; inventory records; inventories of materials, equipment and products; office equipment in proper operating condition; electronic equipment; financial and account records.
  • Track goods and materials.
  • Enter information into databases and software programs.
  • Refer customers to appropriate personnel.
  • Distribute materials to patrons and customers.
  • Inspect items for damage and defects.
  • Demonstrate activity techniques and equipment use.
  • Answer telephones to direct calls and provide information.
  • Type documents.
  • Sort mail.
  • Issue documentation and identification to customers and patrons.
  • Process library materials.
  • Send information, materials and documentation.
  • Collect deposits, payments and fees.
  • Repair books and other printed materials.
  • Operate office equipment.
  • Attach identification information to products, items and containers.
  • Package objects for shipping.
  • Store records and related materials.
  • Provide customer service to patrons.
  • Deliver items.
  • Arrange items for use or display.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties require extensive standing, walking, crouching, squatting, climbing stairs, and lifting in a library setting; bending, lifting and stooping; lifting and carrying boxes or other objects weighing up to 25-30 pounds each; and pushing carts weighing up to 50 pounds each.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
  • Customer Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Clerical- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • English Language- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Computers and Technology – Knowledge of working with a computer and the ability to learn new software.
  • Service Orientation - Looking for ways to help people and ability to treat information with confidentiality.
  • Information Ordering - Ordering or arranging things. Ability to pay attention to detail to maintain accuracy. High organizational skills. Ability to alphabetize and follow the Dewey Decimal system for accurate shelving.
  • Communication Skills - Ability to relate to, work with and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public; and ability to follow oral and written instructions;

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Library experience.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
