Job Description

Legislative Assistant to Chair At-Large, Phyllis J. Randall will correspond with constituents and advance policy initiatives that will improve the quality of life for residents of Loudoun County. The individual hired for this position will have strong writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills. When hired, they will also report to and assist the Chief of Staff on projects that span a wide range of policy areas. Professional demeanor, discretion, and interest in the legislative process are paramount for this position.

Responsibilities and duties reporting to the Chief of Staff include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Track and compile constituent correspondence by issue area;
  • Draft and send responses to constituent correspondence;
  • Ensure that Chair At-Large has transportation to and staffing at each public appearance in consultation with Executive Assistant and Chief of Staff;
  • Research items coming before the Board of Supervisors and provide briefings as necessary;
  • Liaise with Supervisors' offices, as necessary and/or directed by Chief of Staff;
  • Liaise with nonprofits in Loudoun County and the Greater Washington region;
  • Assist in the development and delivery of the Office's newsletter;
  • Participate in place of and/or along with Chief of Staff or Chair At-Large, as directed; and
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Special Requirements

Professional skills: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication and organizational skills, Ability to consistently multitask, Professional telephone and office demeanor and Ability to operate within the Office's chain of command.

Personal characteristics: Honesty and discretion in handling of confidential information. Preferred candidates will be comfortable working in a high-pressure environment and able to think quickly on their feet. Candidates must be comfortable speaking on behalf of the Chair At-Large and comfortable speaking to a variety of people under various circumstances.

The job duties of the Legislative Assistant will be performed in the office, including frequent nights and weekends, at public events, at private events, and with remote work opportunities once training has been completed.
