THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $52,875 to $75,861. Salary determination is based upon the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as departmental budget and equity considerations.

Who we are:

The North Carolina Justice Academy has two campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg and provides all levels of training for Law Enforcement Officers, Detention Officers, and Telecommunicators. Topics include anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy collaborates with the Criminal Justice and Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commissions to ensure training is developed to fit the needs of the officers.

This position will serve as one of the Training Managers located at the east campus of the NC Justice Academy. Work includes administrative, coordinative, and instructional responsibility in training programs in criminal justice and law enforcement topics.

Develops and implements a long-rang plan for the training teams through analysis of the requested needs of the client groups, the goals and objectives of the organization, the directions of the regulatory commissions and the resources of the organization;
activates the training teams’ curricula by reviewing the content, relevancy and adult transfer of learning capability of the material as they relate to the mission of the team;
compares the data from field needs surveys to the present strength and resources of the organization to determine the delivery of service to the client groups;
communicates directly with representatives from the client groups to ensure that service delivery schedule and content is optimal.

Position work activities include: work direction and plans for the training team staff (Instructor/Coordinator) by reviewing the proposed training schedule for the training team and directing any modifications to meet the organization goals and the client group needs; performance management through the development of an individual work plan for each member of the training team, monitor the performance of the instructor/coordinator, conduct periodic meetings with the employee to ensure that goals are met or to make any modifications due to changing organizational circumstances;
resources acquisition and allocation by monitoring the actual travel and equipment expenses with those projected by the team,
seek additional funding through review of grant or endowment publications from private, state and federal sources;
link training teams to other groups/organizations by establishing mutually beneficial relationships and seeking avenues wherein collaboration will benefit the client group, the organization and the training team members;
budget and financial management by participating in the management team structure to develop a plan wherein the resources of the organization are allocated for maximum effectiveness.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
  • Considerable knowledge of current management practices, especially as they relate to work teams and on-site supervision; demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of local, municipal, state, and federal training programs in the field of criminal justice.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic education and training methods and techniques. Vast practical and academic knowledge of those areas covered by instruction.
  • Ability to plan and execute evaluative measures regarding training programs, instructional quality, and student progress.
  • Ability to understand and apply federal, State, and local regulations to the scope and quality of educational programs.
  • Ability to effectively, concisely, and accurately convey ideas in written and oral form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, fellow instructors, and students.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret organizational and procedural problems and to make alternatives in existing systems.
  • Ability to delegate professional assignments to subordinates and evaluate their work, all within a team-based environment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master s degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which instruction is to be conducted, including at least one year in an administrative and supervisory capacity;
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least four years of training experience in a team-based work environment and at least one year of prior supervisor experience in a relevant field.
