Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technician (Demil Tech III) BGCAPP. This position is in Richmond, KY.



The Laboratory Technician acts as a skilled technician in accordance with applicable policies and non-routine procedures to complete laboratory hazardous waste management and processing, sample collection, and general laboratory tasks. Candidate may communicate directly with client and other technical representatives and provides in-depth reports for manager is a clear and concise manner.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management of wastes generated as a result of laboratory operations until turnover to Operations waste management personnel
  • Tracks age of laboratory wastes and notifies lab manager and project waste manager when age reaches preset limits
  • Performs laboratory hazardous material inventory verification
  • Conducts housekeeping activities including glassware washing, sweeping, mopping, and bench cleaning as directed by the laboratory operations manager or shift manager
  • Assists with routine support analyses including pH analyses, titrations, and simple gravimetric analyses as trained
  • Maintains document records for SAA and 90 day storage areas in compliance with applicable RCRA, KDEP, EPA, and local regulations
  • Responsible for day-to-day collection, chain of custody initiation and transport of various laboratory and plant samples for the BGCAPP laboratory
  • Ensures adequate sample containers and ancillary equipment is on hand to support sampling operations
  • Demonstrates knowledge of theory behind waste, wastewater and solids sampling by creatively identifying solutions and correctly interpreting observations.
  • Startups, operates and maintains specialized analytical equipment such as burets, pH meters, and centrifuges in support of routine and semi-routine wet chemistry analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Perform extractions of environmental or process samples to include GB and VX hydrolysate, hydrolysate organics, TSS, and TDS in support as dictated by sample workflows. Effectively prioritizes work assignments and schedules for adapting workflow requirements to maximize efficiency.
  • Performs re-conditioning of used DAAMS tubes in preparation for resuse.
  • Performs and maintains records for the inspection and testing of lab safety devices to verify accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of using established practices.
  • Prepares non-agent calibration, challenge or reagent solutions used to validate analytical methods or supports routine analytical analysis.
  • Supports the BGCAPP safety culture by working safely in accordance with procedures and by enforcing a safe work environment
  • Develops, operates and maintains the laboratories hazardous waste management program for waste accumulation or <90-day sites in accordance with local, State and Federal regulations, with minimal supervision, using creativity and initiative to resolve undocumented technical challenges.
  • Serves as the laboratory’s subject matter expert and demonstrates knowledge of theory behind hazardous waste regulations and standards by correctly administering waste codes and interpreting characterization results as required by the Project.
  • Develops hazardous waste profiles, administers waste codes and labeling for complex lab matrices where considerable judgment is required to support final disposition of waste materials.
  • Assist chemical hygiene officer in development of the HAZCOM program for the lab and maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) inventory. This includes initiation of approval using Project databases, tracking, trending and issuance of products for use to laboratory personnel.
  • Performs routine analysis in support of waste characterizations to verify accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work to meet project technical requirements and laboratory data quality objectives.
  • Provides technical input into the development and control of the laboratory waste management scope for improving or implementing new approaches, cost reductions, equipment justifications and schedule parameters to BGCAPP management.
  • During the first 5 months in this position, must achieve and maintain qualifications in required subject areas in accordance with BGCAPP procedure (Laboratory Training Plan).

Key Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required with 1-3 years of chemical laboratory, waste handling, and sample collection experience. Associates degree or higher with 6 months of hazardous waste handling, sample collection, and laboratory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in toxic material handling, sample collection techniques, and wet chemistry and EPA methods (8260, 8270, 9045, 9012, 8081, and 6020) highly desirable.
  • Excellent PC skills with database entry and management (e.g. Windows OS, MS Office Suite) required.
  • Self-initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule and organize work.


Additional selection and retention criteria will include the ability to:


  • Must be a US Citizen. The applicant selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet and maintain eligibility requirements to be placed in a Public Trust Position. In addition, applicant selected may be subject to qualification in accordance with Army Regulation 50-6, for placement in the U.S. Army Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP).
  • During the first 5 months in this position, must achieve and maintain qualifications in required subject areas in accordance with BGCAPP procedure (Laboratory Training Plan).
  • Flexibility to respond to urgent project requests and/or changing priorities. This position may be required to work a schedule of rotating shifts (8-12 hours nominally), including weekends and holidays.
  • Drug-free workplace; urine testing for drugs are mandatory.
  • This position involves work near or with toxic and hazardous materials and requires ability to wear protective clothing/mask. Must be clean-shaven; must wear seat belts when driving or riding in vehicles on post.
