Position Overview:

The Washington Labor Education and Research Center at South Seattle College’s Georgetown Campus serves workers statewide, of all ages, races, genders, languages and communities, working in many industries. We provide working people with useful tools, through education, training, conferences and events, and timely, targeted research.

Our education and research focus on the daily experience of Washington workers. We use popular education to support workers developing skills in workplace leadership and advocacy, and build knowledge of workers' rights, labor history, and our political systems. Our research team creates timely, relevant reports on Washington’s working families, with special emphasis on the needs of Washington women, BIPOC, low wage, immigrant, and vulnerable workers.

The Labor and Community Educator will join a team 1) providing public training on topics including rights in the workplace, health and safety issues, peoples’ history, and immigration; 2) sponsoring public conferences on issues of work, labor, and public affairs; and 3) providing special training for labor organizations on organizing, member engagement, bargaining and labor agreements.

We’re looking for a grass-roots activist/educator with experience working in low-wage jobs, experience in anti-racist work, and knowledge about Washington’s BIPOC and immigrant communities. Additional language skills are also helpful.

This position is an exempt position represented by AFT - Seattle Professional Staff.

Salary - Minimum beginning annual salary is $66,716.00 and pay will be based on experience.

What you will be working on:


  • Curriculum Development and Teaching: Use best practices of adult and popular education to develop and present materials about work, workers, and their organizations in training and workshop settings.
  • Outreach: Communicate with constituencies regarding programs via variety of communication technologies and in person.
  • Strategic Program Development and Coordination: Work with Labor Center staff and allies to develop programs and recruit participants.
  • Logistics and administrative support for Center functions: Work with Center and College staff to make Labor Center resources accessible to constituents.
  • Resource for faculty and students: Work with campus programs and instructors to incorporate the specialized knowledge and practices of Labor Education into existing College settings.


What you bring as a candidate
:


(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND a year’s experience in union and/or labor education activities, OR three plus years of union and/or labor education experience.
  • Teaching and public speaking: confident & creative presentation and facilitation skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of unions, labor history and current labor issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Outreach: sensitivity to a broad variety of diversity issues and comfort engaging in controversial topics.
  • Logistics and administrative support for Center functions: basic computer skills; being organized and an excellent time manager; ability and willingness to work occasional evening and weekends.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team
  • Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours, including some evenings and weekends, to meet public/client needs.
  • Fluency in a non-English language desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
