Under minimal supervision performs physical, microbiological and chemical analysis of alcoholic beverages, grapes, grape products, water, incoming materials, and other related materials required for quality control, winemaking, environmental monitoring, research and the evaluation of products and processes facilitating the production of wine and spirit products and evaluation of wine and spirit processes. Responsible for analytical troubleshooting as well as training of newer technicians.


Shift:

This willbe a 6:00 pm to 6:30 am, 12 hour shifts, working a 2,3,2 schedule and every other weekend.


What You Will Do:

GENERAL

  • Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory consideration.
  • Practices safe work habits and maintains work area and instrumentation in a clean and orderly state.
  • Pulls and/or receives samples, prioritizes tests, and reports results in a timely manner.
  • Logs samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) if required to maintain data traceability.
  • Prepares standard laboratory solutions as needed.
  • Enters test results into the laboratory information management system in a timely manner. Reports out data as required.

GENERAL-MICRO

  • Supports microbiological analysis and preparation such as, sampling, monitoring of bottling lines for sanitation efficacy, media prep, sterilizing bottles, and saline bottle prep as directed.
  • Prepares media and engages in sample plating; reads plates and logs results after cultures have had a chance to develop.

ANALYSIS-CHEMIST

  • Performs a broad range of analyses utilizing appropriate distillation, titrimetric, colorimetric and instrumental methods.
  • Operates equipment such as auto-titrators, refractometers, densitometers, gas chromatographs, infrared analyzers, and spectrophotometers.

OTHER LAB

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned by the supervisor including, but not limited to, cleaning, recordkeeping and special projects.
  • Evaluates laboratory quality control data to determine acceptability and releases customer data as appropriate. Where data is found to be unacceptable, quarantines data and initiates corrective action.
  • Performs laboratory instrument calibration and preventative maintenance as required.
  • Engages in instrument troubleshooting.
  • Makes suggestions to improve laboratory practices. Engages team in improvement opportunities
  • Supports method development activities in the laboratory.
  • Participates in the on-boarding and training of laboratory personnel.
  • Provides support and direction to laboratory team members when lab supervisors are not available.
  • Completes all initial and on-going quality and safety training in a timely manner
  • Works independently to perform all duties with an understanding of the lab’s commitment to quality and customer service as outlined in the laboratory’s ISO 17025-compliant quality management system without supervision

PRODUCTION SUPPORT

  • Looks for unexpected deviations in data indicating issues with operations. Works with team to troubleshoot and provide corrective action in product processing.
  • Follows response plan if samples are out of tolerance.
  • Responsible for initiating holds on products out of specification as required.
  • Communicates directly with production staff if production samples are out of specification.
  • Teams with production staff to perform investigation and root cause of out of specification products.
  • Tastes alcoholic beverages, conducts evaluations, and communicates significant differences within tastings to manager or team leaderships.

What You Will Need:


  • Bachelor's degree with a combined 20 college coursework units of chemistry, biology, and/or microbiology plus 2 years of chemistry/microbiology laboratory experience; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 4 years, of paid laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibilities; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 3 years of E & J Gallo Quality Assurance experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Required to be at least 21 years of age.
  • Skilled in reading, comprehending, interpreting and executing simple instructions, detailed work instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Skilled in writing simple correspondence.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Skilled in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using whole numbers and decimals.
  • Required to work day or night shifts when scheduled.
  • Required to lift and move equipment weighing up to 45 pounds.

What Will Set You Apart:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Sciences, such as Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Food Science or Enology plus 2 years of quality assurance laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility in a manufacturing environment.
  • Required to identify variances in alcoholic beverages color by sight and identify spirit flavors by taste and smell.
  • Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repair skills with laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Experience speaking effectively before groups of customers or employees within the organization.
  • Skilled in applying concepts such as statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Experience defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.

Compensation:


  • $44,540 - $70,800
  • Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
