JWST Spectra of Planets and Brown Dwarfs
Job description
An opportunity exists to use high contrast imaging to search for new exolpanets and to study known exoplanets as part of Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) and an approved General Observer (GO) program with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The goals of the program are to obtain 3-15 um photometry of known exoplanets and to use JWST's extraordinary sensitivity at wavelengths beyond 2.5 um and outside of ~1"" to search for lower mass planets than is possible with ground-based telescopes. Targets of this progrm include HR 8799, Vega, Fomalhaut, Epsilon Eri, HD 90856 and alpha Centauri.
The successful applicant will work with data from a variety of JWST instruments (NIRCam, NIRSpec and MIRI). Expertise with coronagphic image post processing of coronaphic data, state-of-the-art spectral models for Jovian mass objects, and/or spectral retrieval methods are important requirements for the position.
