About the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility:

The Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility (PNJCF) is a maximum security facility that was established on July 5, 2000. The facility houses over 200 adjudicated, delinquent male juveniles. Youth assigned here may have been sentenced from any of the 92 counties in the State of Indiana. Pendleton offers a sex offender program along with other treatment, including vocational, academic, and volunteer strategies designed, in accordance with its mission, to facilitate a more successful habilitation program and, even more importantly, a successful community re-entry.


Salary Information:

This position typically starts out at $22/hour.


About the Job:

As the Correctional Officer, you will be responsible for working as a part of a team in an Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) facility for juvenile or adult Incarcerated Individuals. In this position, you will be reporting to a Correctional Sergeant working on a 12-hour shift, rotating across a variety of duty assignments as needed. You will be responsible for supervising the Incarcerated Individuals and monitoring their daily activities. This includes directing and ensuring that the Incarcerated Individuals perform their daily activities on schedules such as meals, recreation, education, programs, and work assignments.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:


  • Patrol assigned areas at various intervals for the security of Incarcerated Individuals, count of Incarcerated Individuals, and security of buildings and grounds.
  • Follow or ensure compliance with established security procedures.
  • Stationed on Tower duty conducting overwatch of Facility security, including the possession and possible use of firearms, after completion of specific training.
  • Supervise Incarcerated Individuals in various work details including general clean-up of institutional grounds and buildings.
  • Escort Incarcerated Individuals to and from the visiting room and dining room and on various trips away from the institution.
  • Keep records and report such matters as inmate movements and progress and Incarcerated Individual’s violations of rules.
  • Work together as a team on searching cellblocks and/or dormitories for possible contraband.
  • Search visitors, packages, and vehicles entering and leaving the gates for contraband and trafficking offenses.
  • Encourage Incarcerated Individuals to accept professional assistance from staff.
  • Monitor assigned areas at various intervals for the security of offenders, count of offenders, and security of buildings and grounds.
  • Escort offenders to and from various locations across the facility for food, medicines, work assignment, and recreation.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Possession of a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE).
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.
  • Veteran/law enforcement candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to work with and around offenders per IDOC mission statement.
  • Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime in any shift; up to 16 consecutive hours per day.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear directions to offenders, completing offender/conduct reports, etc.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
