The U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern District of Texas make up one of the largest and busiest districts among the country's 94 federal judicial districts. The district and bankruptcy courts, combined with the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices: Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.

We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Courtroom Deputy for Bankruptcy Judge Marvin Isgur in the Houston division. The successful candidate will perform specialized and simultaneous courtroom functions such as electronic court recording (ECRO), calendaring, order entry, court minutes and other courtroom services work. The candidate must be willing to cross-train on all aspects of Judge Isgur's court and to work with his staff to provide the highest level of public service.

Target grade is CL 26. Successful applicant will be placed at the highest grade and step for which they qualify.

Representative Duties

  • The duties involve managing the judge's caseload, attending and logging court proceedings.
  • Many of the courtroom deputy's duties will be performed in the courtroom during court proceedings.
  • The courtroom deputy will be responsible for maintaining and processing case information in accordance with approved internal controls, procedures and rules.
  • The courtroom deputy will perform docketing, order entry and noticing, maintains official case records, reviews filed documents to determine conformity, and takes appropriate action to ensure that all orders and automated entries are appropriately and accurately docketed.
  • The courtroom deputy also provides backup assistance to the case manager, and vice versa.
  • The courtroom deputy will interact with parties that appear before the court and be prepared to be courteous, professional and helpful.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, two years general progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position, and one to three years' experience requiring the application of clerical procedures, the routine use of keyboard skills, use of specialized terminology and demonstrated ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives or laws.

The successful applicants will have a demonstrated ability to handle a large volume of work and possess the ability to make decisions, multi-task, prioritize and manage his/her own workload. Excellent customer service, communication and organizational skills are also required. Knowledge of CM/ECF useful.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a four-year college degree in related fields; experience and judgment with legal documents such as those that might be found in a law office or in another court of any jurisdiction, or prior paralegal experience.

Strong preference is given to candidates who have experience in bankruptcy law.

The successful candidate must be able to work irregular hours as dictated by the Court.
