Duties

  • Designing and building solutions for ingesting, curating, and analyzing data at scale.
  • Collecting and preparing data for use by data scientists and analysts.
  • Documenting data transformation rules to meet the requirements for system interfaces and data integration projects.
  • Performing data profiling to identify quality gaps and determine if data is fit for use for its intended purpose.
  • Researching and evaluating data engineering tools and technologies.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you must meet a basic requirement for each series you are applying to. Those requirements are listed in the Education section below.

Your resume must show that you have the following specialized experience.
  • Experience with data orchestration tools (e.g., dbt, Dagster, Airflow, Prefect, Luigi, Azure Data Factory, Google Cloud Functions, AWS Step Functions, Metaflow, Flyte)
  • Experience with one or more database technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, Neo4j, Couchbase, Cassandra).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You must meet a basic requirement for this position. Each series has a separate requirement:

Mathematical Statistics, 1529 series:

  • Degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics, or
  • A combination of education and experience - at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Computer Scientist, 1550 series:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, or a bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
Data Scientist, 1560 series:.
  • Degree: mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position, or
  • Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications for the Computer Scientist and Data Scientist will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for Veterans' Preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.

In addition to the online questionnaire, applicants in these series will be evaluated by one or more subject matter experts. Subject matter experts will review your resume and other application materials to determine your qualifications and assign a rating based on the required competencies.
