Description

College of The Albemarle welcomes applications from individuals interested in an adjunct (part-time) Instructor, Procedural and Diagnostic Coding position. Part-time and/or substitute instructor appointments are made on a semester-by-semester and/or as needed basis. Positions are not benefit eligible. The candidate should have the ability to accommodate a flexible working schedule and limited travel within the service area. This job posting will serve as a pool of applicants from which the hiring manager may consult as needs arise.

The role of the Part-time Instructor, Procedural and Diagnostic Coding is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal.

The instructor for Procedural and Diagnostic Coding is supervised by the Program Coordinator, Medical Office Administration.

Examples of Duties

  • Prepare, teach and evaluate assigned instructional courses (classroom, lab, clinical).
  • Update course syllabi to reflect changes.
  • Develop supplemental teaching materials to augment courses.
  • Create, maintain and update course information as well as grades in an online Learning Management System.
  • Implement new teaching strategies as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance and performance.
  • Submit reports in accurate and timely manner.
  • Adhere to assigned teaching load/hours.
  • Integrate new technology in instructional delivery methods.
  • Adhere to/enforces policies and procedures related to academic area.
  • Maintain a hazard free environment and practices safety in lab(s) or classroom.
  • Keep students advised of their progress in class and when needed, refer students to the Academic Support Center for assistance.
  • Write letters of recommendations for students on request if appropriate.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in academic field.
  • Adhere to college's policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Office Administration, Office Administration or other related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
Desired:
  • Two years teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Current American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P) or Advancing the business of health care (AAPC) (CPC Certified professional Coder).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required:

  • Strong knowledge in the following areas:
    • Medical terminology
    • Electronic health records
    • ICD-10-CM and HCPCS
    • Medical legal issues
  • Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge in the use of multi-media technology and computers
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to demonstrate organizational and time management skills.
  • Student centered approach to education.
  • Commitment to teaching in a comprehensive community college.
