Department Summary

The Biological Sciences Department is the largest academic unit within the College of Science and Mathematics and one of the largest at Cal Poly. There are approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, 32 full time faculty, 40-50 part time faculty/teaching associates, and 12 support staff, eight of which are directly involved in supporting the Department's 22 teaching labs and with student and faculty research support. The Marine Science (MSCI) Degree Program at Cal Poly is housed in our Biological Sciences Department and offers a wide range of classroom and research activities. MSCI courses are often lab and field-intensive, requiring substantial time for set up, supervision, and break down of lab activities, and many of these activities occur in the challenging marine environment. In addition, MSCI-associated faculty often teach and conduct student-centered research at the Cal Poly Pier. The Pier is the primary field laboratory facility of the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS) and requires significant investments of personnel time and other resources to maintain its operational status, particularly for the seawater system that offers critical life support for organisms essential to both classroom and research activities.
