PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY

The Instructional Designer will be responsible for working directly with ACES faculty and staff to design, build, and implement academic and professional education online courses (synchronous and asynchronous), supporting their use of instructional technologies, and helping to produce high quality content and engaging online learning experiences for a global audience of adult learners.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Design

    • Support faculty in designing and building online courses, interactive activities, and navigating learning management systems
    • Build interactive content and activities into online courses; create dynamic learning experiences in online courses
    • Collaborate directly with faculty to design online courses
    • Support faculty in effectively using technology to create high engagement online and blended learning experiences
    • Coordinate with appropriate collaborators to review and revise existing online courses (e.g., assessments, content, formats)
    • Communicate and collaborate with faculty and staff across disciplines, departments, units
    • Use best practices in instructional design, development, and continuous improvement
    • Ensure compliance with licensing and copyright laws and regulations
    • Train, supervise and delegate tasks to student workers, interns and hourly staff, ensuring the quality and timely delivery of their work


Teaching/Instruction

    • Develop diverse array of high-quality materials from faculty content, such as video, animation, voiceover, recorded lecture, worksheets, interactive activities, in collaboration with media support staff
    • Apply and disseminate various pedagogical theories, instructional design models, and best practices in online and other innovative education modalities, including related to accessibility and universal design
    • Develop online tutorials, technical documentation, training sessions and related web content for instructional technologies
    • Provide training and professional development opportunities for instructors to learn about online course development

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

    • Master’s degree in instructional design, distance learning, adult education, educational technology or a related field. Master’s degrees in other fields will be considered with work experience that demonstrates similar competencies.
    • Demonstrated experience designing and/or teaching online courses, including asynchronous courses.
    • 5 years of experience designing learning offerings in response to an identified business or learning problem
    • Extensive experience with learning management systems and technology tools such as Coursera, Canvas, Zoom, and Kaltura
    • Project management skills, including leading, managing, organizing, and successfully completing multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred:

    • Experience creating online courses for adult learners
    • Experience working directly with faculty in higher education
    • Experience using online tools to create interactive learning experiences
    • Proficiency with Adobe Suite
    • Certificate in online teaching, instructional design, eLearning, Quality Matters or related credentials

Successful candidate will have:

    • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience
    • Keen attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of best practices in standards-compliant responsive web design, accessibility, user-experience design, and information architecture
    • Successful candidates will have some previous experience in course design and development and be familiar with the latest best practices, tools, and research in online learning design, and have an interest in growing their skills as part of an innovative, collaborative design team
    • Ability to troubleshoot basic educational technology issues

Successful candidates will be able to:

    • design learning content while centering the user experience
    • design learning products for the unique needs of each identified audience (e.g., adult learners, degree and non-degree students, non-credit learners)
    • design rigorous and relevant formative and summative assessments to effectively measure progress and mastery
    • work with multimedia teams to develop engaging multimedia content
    • work with and/or lead teams to create a quality user experience, build learning assets, and design curriculum
    • be flexible and creative when faced with competing priorities
    • effectively manage projects that involve diverse individuals who may be local or at a distance
    • demonstrate skills in problem solving, communication, collaboration, and organization
    • proactively manage course design, development issues, and project schedules
    • use learning management systems such as Coursera, Canvas, Zoom, and Kaltura
    • lead meetings with faculty and partners to design learning assets
    • collaborate across networks and work effectively in virtual teams
    • converse with faculty about educational, pedagogic, and technology issues
    • apply instructional design principles, learning theory, and educational technologies in the design and development of online learning experiences


SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS:

This is a full-time (100%, 12-month) Academic Professional hybrid or fully remote appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
