POSITION: Instructional Aide/Summer Custodian

JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Assist in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements.
  • Work under supervision of certified teacher, administrator, or office staff member.

CUSTODIAN DESCRIPTION
  • Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Candidates must possess or be willing to attain certification as an educational aide. (Cost is approximately $80.)

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructionsAbility to communicate effectively

CUSTODIAN SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies
  • Willingness to comply with state fingerprinting requirements

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
  • Assist with administrative and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments
  • Help maintain neat and orderly work areas
  • Help keep administrative records and prepare required reports
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the supervising staff members; work with individual students or small groups
  • Help supervise students throughout the day, inside and outside classroom.
  • This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty (if applicable)
  • Keep supervising staff members informed of special needs or problems of individual students
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

CUSTODIAN RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, whiteboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms
  • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs
  • Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff
  • Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity
  • Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal
  • Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal
  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events
  • Assist with opening and closing building each school day
  • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy
  • Perform routine inspections of machines and equipment for safety and efficiency
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain confidentiality

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Some experience working with children
  • Previous custodial experience preferred

OTHER INFORMATION:
  • This position will be traveling to multiple campuses.
  • The combination of school year positions will allow selected applicants to work in one environment during the regular school year, but have continued employment during the summer months with the district's facility services department during the summer. The combination allows for enhanced income for selected applicants.
