The In-House Counsel will provide strategy, consultation, and support to the leadership team on a comprehensive range of services, contracts and liability involved in carrying out the mission of the ACC.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Advising ACC team members on new laws, existing laws and legal rights that would impact functionality of the business.
  • Overseeing the legal matters of the business as a whole, including acting as the business legal representative.
  • Maintaining knowledge of the company's legal documents and operations.
  • Crafting and reviewing legal strategy in response to any litigation.
  • Keeping a record of all legal documents, contracts and proceedings for the company.
  • Facilitating filings of licensing forms and other statutory requirements.
  • Drafts, reviews, and approves policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other legal documents.
  • Reviews and negotiations contracts, leases, and other legal documents; researches legal issues and recommends revisions as necessary.
  • Represents or oversees the representation of ACC in judicial and administrative proceedings, and negotiations.
  • Provides training to ACC team members on various legal issues through seminars and meetings.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
  • J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school
  • Three plus (3+) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Member of Michigan State Bar, or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state
  • Non-profit or Foundation experience Preferred.

  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Knowledge of the range of applicable laws and regulations which impact on all facets of employment policies.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret issues and to prepare legal opinions.
  • Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Negotiating skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures and the regulatory environment within which they operate.
  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of the judicial system and procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
