Job description
Housing Justice Center (HJC) is a nonprofit public interest advocacy and legal organization that works to support and advance tenant protections, preserve and protect affordable housing, and change our housing system so all Minnesotans can be stably housed with dignity, while remaining rooted in community. The tools we use for this work are organizing, research, education, policy advocacy, and legal advocacy. Our primary goals are to: Prevent affordable housing loss, displacement, and exploitation of low-income Black, Indigenous, and communities of color; people with disabilities; immigrants; families; and, seniors. Ensure people have real choices for safe, healthy, affordable, accessible, culturally adaptive, and convenient housing Ensure communities have the power to drive decision-making about their housing futures Located in St. Paul, MN, HJC serves low-income renters and manufactured community homeowners statewide. Working with HJC, you get the unique opportunity to work with a public interest law firm that practices a movement lawyering approach using an intersectional race equity lens. HJC works directly with low-income and BIPOC renters who are experiencing housing instability. These renters identify the issues and strategies for change that matter to them and these priority issues form the basis of our work. Our clients determine what a successful outcome looks like. When working with HJC, you will be in a collaborative and flexible environment where there are ample opportunities for professional growth and mentorship. As a VISTA Tenant Organizer with HJC, you will receive a $400 monthly housing stipend, mileage compensation, paid professional development opportunities, extensive mentorship and network building opportunities, and experience in a justice-oriented non-profit which centers organizing principles internally as well as externally.
Member Duties : The HJC VISTA will build out capacity for supporting renters in Chisago, Wright, Isanti, and Sherburne counties where there is a lack of organizing infrastructure in place for community-centered solutions to local housing issues.
