Mandatory COVID-19 guideline:

As of March 15th, 2022, all onsite JSH employees must have received the necessary doses to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series (i.e., one dose of a single-dose vaccine or all doses of a multiple vaccine series) or have been granted a qualifying exemption, or are identified as having a temporary delay as recommended by the CDC. New hires also will be required to comply with this requirement before working onsite at any JSH facility.


The Section Supervisor must promote good public relations for the department and Jennie Stuart Medical Center while maintaining patient/customer confidentiality. The Section Supervisor applies and implements the philosophy, goals and objectives of JSMC. Responsible for planning and coordinating all the functions within the responsible section of the Laboratory including testing, training, maintaining supplies and relating with other sections within the laboratory; ensure that services are of the best quality and are carried out in an expeditious manner; responsible for recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Manager, or Medical Director. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served: Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.

  • To perform laboratory testing, as assigned and authorized, per protocols/procedures.
  • Promptly arrives for designated shift.
  • Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.
  • Performs testing in a timely manner. Maintains standards in STAT, Timed, ASAP, and Routine testing.
  • Documents quality control, maintenance, and/or calibration procedures performed, as per policy.
  • Ensures specimens are labeled properly.
  • Investigates abnormal results.
  • Correlates test results with diagnosis and questions incompatible results.
  • Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age-specific population criteria.
  • Complete work assigned during shift and leaves minimal amount for next shift without sacrificing quality of care.
  • Follows through on tests or procedures left from a previous shift.
  • Continually uses time to department advantage.
  • Demonstrates competence in all procedures required in accordance with policy.
  • Assists in training of students as necessary.
  • Performs/provides orientation and in-service training of staff, students, and other departmental personnel.
  • Cognizant of environmental factors, infection control issues, and maintains a safe environment.
  • Maintains a system of inventory control for responsible section which minimizes waste.
  • Continually updates and revises section related procedure manuals. Reviews all written procedures at least annually.
  • Responsible for ongoing review of QC, calibrations, maintenance, etc, as required.
  • Ensures compliance with Laboratory Safety Policies and Infection Control within the responsible section.
  • Responsible for accurate and thoroughly documented Quality Assurance in department section.
  • Responsible for competency testing of staff within laboratory department.
  • Ensures compliance with professional standards, practices, and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Assumes responsibility for continuing education requirement as required by certifying agency.
  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned.
  • Completes all mandatory in-service and health stream education requirement before deadline.
  • Abides by hospital and departmental dress code.
  • Utilizes slow times to departmental advantage by filling in with office/clerical work, assisting other staff, performing general household duties, putting away supplies, and other departmental tasks.
  • Willing to adjust personal schedule in case of departmental need.
  • Responsible for assignment and completion of proficiency surveys within the time allotted.
  • Limits personal telephone calls.
  • To serve on designated hospital committees, as assigned.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Experience


Licensure / Certification / Registration:

Certified as a Medical Technologist from a national accrediting agency.


Education:


  • High school graduate or equivalent and must have engaged in high complexity testing prior to April 25, 1995, OR
  • Bachelors’ Degree and certificate from a NAACLS-accredited medical laboratory training program, OR
  • Associates’ Degree or 60 semester hours in a physical, chemical, or biological science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited college or university, and required experience by accrediting agency if acceptable to national registry, OR
  • Bachelors’ Degree in a natural science and related experience from an accredited college or university, and required experience by accrediting agency.

Experience:

Minimum of three years as a generalist preferred.
