Statement of Duties

Position provides skilled labor functions. Responsibilities include performing masonry, concrete, and curbsetting work, operating trucks required for work projects, and ensuring for the safe and efficient operation of vehicles.

Supervision

Employee works under the general supervision of the Working Foreman. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently, with specific instruction. Any questionable cases are referred to the supervisor for clarification or interpretation. The employee's work is reviewed only to an extent sufficient to keep the Working Foreman aware of progress, and to insure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.

Job Environment

Position responsibilities require the use of judgment and initiative to interpret the numerous standardized practices, procedures, codes or general instructions governing the work.

Employee is expected to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline for a given situation.

Errors can result in personal injury/loss, delay or loss of service, damage to equipment, or injury to others.

The position seldom has contact with the public or City employees, in person to respond to inquiries and provide information and assistance.


Essential Functions

  • Prepares job sites prior to beginning work; measures and lays out work to be performed; determines proper grades; and measures for quantity of materials needed for job.
  • Ensures that all safety precautions are followed while performing work.
  • Drives trucks to haul materials, plows snow, operates sander and other vehicles as assigned.
  • Performs a CDL circle check; lubricates, adds oil, inflates tires and otherwise services trucks to ensure proper operation; reports any malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Performs skilled masonry, concrete, and curbsetting work needed in the maintenance and construction of public work structures.
  • Performs duties of laborer, operates jackhammer, shovels dirt, gravel, and other materials.
  • Participates in snow and ice removal operations and other emergencies as declared by the City.
  • May supervise a helper or laborer who performs task related work.
  • Performs similar or related duties as required by the supervisor.


Recommended Minimum Qualifications Physical and Mental Requirements

Employee works outdoors around loud vehicles and equipment. Employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moving mechanical parts more than 2/3rd of the time; toxic or caustic chemicals, and fumes and airborne particles up to 2/3rd of the time; and high places, traffic, up to 1/3rd of the time. Employee is required to stand, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms more than 2/3rd of the time; talk, listen, drive, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl up to 2/3rd of the time; and sit, climb, and/or balance up to 1/3rd of the time. The position frequently lifts and moves from 60lbs to over I00lbs. Equipment used includes trucks in excess of 26,001 lbs., light trucks, light equipment, pneumatic tools, power tools, and hand tools.


Education and Experience

A candidate for this position should have a High School Diploma or equivalent; three to five (3 - 5) years of prior experience in masonry, concrete finishing, curb setting, truck driving, and snow plowing. A candidate for this position should have a valid Massachusetts driver's license.

Special Requirements

A candidate for this position is required to have a Class B Commercial Driver's License. Class A preferred.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

A candidate for this position should have knowledge of:

  • Stone, masonry, curbsetting, and concrete work
  • Truck driving and snow plowing practices and procedures
  • Occupational safety precautions

Skill in:

  • Safely and efficiently driving trucks and operating tools and equipment

And ability to:

  • Read and follow oral and written instructions
  • Perform strenuous physical work over an extended period of time and to lifts, carries, and places heavy objects
