Healthcare Science Practitioner – NHS England Stickler Syndrome Highly Specialised Service

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NHS England Highly Specialised Service and the East of England Genetics Laboratory Hub (EEGLH) in providing molecular genetic analysis for families and patients with Stickler syndrome. You will join a highly specialised team dedicated to providing this national service at the cutting edge of translational research for this disorder, assisting and under the direction of, the Senior Scientist in providing genomic techniques encompassing DNA amplification, gel analysis, mini-gene construction, cell culture and transfection, RNA isolation and rt-PCR.

The post is split between the van Geest Centre for Brain Repair and the East of England Genetics Laboratory Hub (EEGLH) both of which are on the Cambridge University Hospitals Biomedical campus and within easy walking distance of each other. It is a full-time, permanent post but informal enquiries are welcome from candidates unable to work full-time.

This specialist service is assessed annually by NHS England Highly Specialised Services and in 2016 was awarded the Bayer ophthalmology "gold" award for excellence in translation of research into clinical service and patient care. Patients from Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland are also seen as part of the service, but commissioned separately.
1. Perform routine genomic techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, culturing and harvesting of cells.
2. Use and maintenance of specialised equipment.
3. Requisitioning of general laboratory consumables
