Qualifications and Requirements

· A mature Christian who demonstrates living in relationship with Christ, passionate love for the Lord, and a desire to serve in educational ministries

· Masters Degree in Education, Administration or Related Field

· Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience demonstrating skills required for effective school administration

· Proven success with strategic planning and organizational development, preferably in a school setting

· Demonstrated ability to effectively direct and supervise a diverse faculty and staff, manage multiple priorities and be responsive to time constraints

· A functional knowledge of office organization, curriculum development, supervision, tests and measurement, Biblical guidance counseling, Christian philosophy of education, financial management, human resource assessment, systems and physical plant management, public relations, and fundraising

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptional people skills; good interpersonal ability; capacity to build and maintain close relationships and engender trust with a wide range of constituents
  • Integrity above reproach
  • Strong work ethic

Specifically, the headmaster will take responsibility and represent the school in these areas:

Board Relationships

  • Brings to the attention of the Board such matters and information as are appropriate to keep the Board fully informed to meet its responsibilities. This includes suggestions for broad policy development as well as strategies for institutional betterment.
  • Maintains contact with the Board chairman to assure that there are "no surprises." (It is expected that the chairman will also keep the headmaster fully apprised of Board concerns and information.)
  • Functions as chief advisor to the Board, guiding it in the full range of its activities. (In turn, Board and its committees are expected to support the headmaster and his management team.)
  • Suggests philosophic positions appropriate to changes that occur in the community and students served.
  • Serves as chief communicator between the Board and the faculty and staff.

Organization

  • Creates and cultivates a strong management team. The headmaster is expected to share and delegate to his immediate subordinates in such a way that this group is prepared to lead the school collectively should the headmaster suddenly become incapacitated.
  • Sets up an internal organization that permits effective communication, up and down.
  • Labors to produce efficient day-to-day internal operation.

Planning and Analysis

  • Develops tactical plans with the help of key members of the management team. Together they undertake studies of pertinent data (financial, enrollment, academic performance, etc.) to facilitate such plans.
  • Encourages "outside perspective" via testing, comparisons with similar institutions, and external analyses and critiques by consultants.
  • Presses the Board to undertake periodic, systematic, long-range planning.

Programs

  • Designs, implements, and administers student programs and services and develops systems of scheduling to accommodate these.
  • Oversees accreditation processes, implementation, and oversight.
  • Sets standards of participation and achievement in each category: academic, co-curricular, character development, student life.

Personnel

  • Defines the teaching and non-teaching positions needed to carry out the school's programs and selects for employment competent personnel to fill these positions.
  • Administers equitable systems of compensation, working conditions, training, and development for all school employees.
  • Determines standards and takes appropriate steps to measure and maintain reasonable performance and professional growth among immediate subordinates and, through them, all employees. He dismisses those who fail to meet the standards.
  • Establishes practices and procedures to promote harmonious and constructive relationships among all personnel.
  • Maintains contact with employees (all of them, if size permits) to foster good relations, promote high morale, and identify personnel problems as early as possible. And he encourages similar contact on the part of subordinates.

Program and Service Support

  • Administers efforts that provide sufficient support for student programs. This encompasses general equipment and facilities.
  • Assures that a comprehensive set of records is maintained in accordance with the needs of the school, its constituents, and the legal authorities.

Environment

  • Holds general operating responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students under the school's jurisdiction.
  • Approves and administers rules and procedures governing the student body.
  • Works to promote harmonious and constructive relationships among parents, students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Strives to set up and maintain an attractive environment that is compatible with the character of the institution.

Finances

  • Presents financial plans and annual budgets to the Board to achieve the objectives of the school.
  • Maintains a system of cost control to foster efficiency consistent with high standards of education and the limitations of the budget.
  • Manages a cost-effective system of purchasing, billing, accounting, investing, and insurance.
  • Recommends tuition rates and salary adjustments annually.
  • Recommends enrollment objectives with respect to student numbers, character, and quality—and executes programs to achieve them.
  • Recommends supplemental streams of revenue to offset school’s reliance on annual tuition and fundraising.
  • Establishes standards and procedures for student admissions and dismissals.
  • Recommends a suitable scholarship and grant-in-aid program to the Board and executes that program.

Fund Raising

  • Advises the Board with respect to fundraising needs and plans.
  • Proposes realistic goals for annual, capital, and deferred giving programs.
  • Coordinates fund-raising efforts and events, seeking to find points of entry for prospective donors from all economic backgrounds. Cultivates long-term relationships with the school.
  • Plans and directs fundraising efforts that include one-time and regular gift-giving opportunities; grant-seeking; and partnerships with churches, businesses, and other non-profits. Becomes personally involved in the cultivation and solicitation of major prospects, as needed.

Public Relations

  • Encourages significant alumni, parent, and past-parent participation in events that support the goals of the school.
  • Works to maintain programs that contribute to relations with the local community.
  • Builds and maintains cordial and constructive liaisons with area churches, Christian and secular non-profits (especially those serving children and families), other educational institutions (including schools to which Cornerstone students later matriculate) and associations.
  • Interprets the school and its programs to the public and strives to become the personification of the institution. Acts as spokesman for the school.

Plant Management

  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of all school facilities. Within budget limits, approves expenditures for operation and maintenance.
  • Recommends changes or additions necessary to implement student programs or to maintain desired standards of appearance and safety.
  • Endeavors to ensure that the plant accommodates the program rather than dictates the program or its means of operation.
