ABOUT GREENPEACE
Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. For almost fifty years, Greenpeace has fought to save the planet from the threat of global warming, destruction of ancient forests, deterioration of our oceans, and the threat of a nuclear disaster. Greenpeace does not accept funds from any corporations or government entities, safeguarding our independence and ability to speak the truth and act boldly. We recognize the importance of the moment: ours is the first generation to understand and experience the impacts of climate change and global scale ecosystem destruction, and the last generation with a window of time to do something about it.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Head of Forests Program will dedicate the majority of their time to leading a campaign project, with additional responsibilities for building the Forests program at Greenpeace US. This work is heavily focused on collaborating with Greenpeace colleagues in other National and Regional Offices, in particular Greenpeace Southeast Asia (Indonesia), Greenpeace Brasil, and Greenpeace Africa (Democratic Republic of the Congo). Priority support may go to work in partnership with Greenpeace Southeast Asia to stop the palm oil industry from driving deforestation in Indonesia; work with Greenpeace Brasil to stop mining and financial flows that drive deforestation; and developing collaborations with other Greenpeace offices around market drivers of deforestation in these and other parts of the world's forests.

The Head of Forests Program will build on Greenpeace's pioneering initiatives to map out corporate power in order to create accountability, risk and consequences not only for the corporate groups themselves but also for political actors, international markets, and the global financial sector that enables them. The Head of Forests Program will also work with the National Campaigns Director, Chief Program Officer, and the Development Department to identify new campaign opportunities and raise the resources needed for them, and will manage general requests and questions related to Forests at Greenpeace US.

This is a grant-funded, full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible, hybrid position, based in any authorized Greenpeace state: CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, MD, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OR, VA, WA, and will report to the Program Special Projects Manager.

The Head of Forests Program will be responsible for the following:

  • Serve as spokesperson with media and external audiences to advance our campaigns and enhance organizational profile. Sign-off and steward all materials related to forests at Greenpeace USA which include marketing, fundraising materials, and online communications, social media and media communications – core communications with the potential to shape narratives, fundraising and key priorities forward
  • Manage the Forests project team and budget, including cross-departmental task management and, as applicable, line management
  • Ensuring the project output contributes to achieving expected outcomes, and maintains rigorous monitoring, evaluation and learning processes.
  • Keen judgment about what will work with key audiences, advance engagement goals, and organizational capacity
  • Invests time and energy in management training, especially managing for equity and justice
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Campaigns Director

Minimum Requirements of the Head of Forests Program include:
