Groundskeeper III performs tasks related to and including maintenance of turf grass, trees, and ornamental plants, roads, parking areas, cemeteries, and fencing. Works as an individual or team member maintaining the general appearance of the grounds to present a pleasing and safe setting. The Grounds Keeper II works under the general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor. Completion of work requires occasionally originating new methods and/or techniques with decisions being varied but based on broad principles and guidelines. The Grounds Keeper III is responsible for assigned property. This position is normally an 8 hour day shift position.


Essential Job Functions:
1. Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
2. Perform standard cultural practices required to establish and maintain healthy turf grass to present a pleasing appearance.
3. Operate standard hand tools and power equipment used in landscaping and plant care.
4. Perform standard horticultural practice required to establish and maintain trees and ornamental plants in a healthy, well-groomed condition.
5. Operate standard hand tools and power equipment used in landscaping and plant care.
6. Perform maintenance on hand tools and power equipment in order to extend the safe usable life of the tool and power equipment.
7. Operate heavy motorized equipment used for landscaping, plant care, and utility installation and/or repair.
8. Assist other construction trades, i.e. electricians, painters, etc. when extra assistance may be required to complete a job.
9. Move or assist in moving material, supplies or equipment for other facility departments.
10. Apply pesticides under the direct supervision of the supervisor for the control of lawn and ornamental pests or other outdoor pests.
11. Perform tasks required to remove trash and debris from facility grounds.
12. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.



Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Ability to use hand tools generally associated with plant care and landscaping.
2. Ability to use power tools and motorized equipment associated with plant care and landscaping.
3. Ability to use heavy equipment, i.e. backhoe, front loader, trencher.
4. Ability to learn the operation and safe use of different hand/power tools and equipment.
5. Knowledge of plant needs required to produce a healthy overall appearance.
6. Knowledge of general construction methods and techniques.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.


Initial Selection Criteria:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of sixth grade. Each year of experience in grounds keeping, gardening, or related work may substitute for each year or required education.


Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. ?Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
