JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: GARAGE MECHANIC B

OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to assist in the maintenance and repairs of FKAA vehicles, small equipment, power

tools, and heavy equipment for the assigned service area. Position reports to Fleet Maintenance Foreman and Area

Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not

exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

Other duties may be required and assigned.

Participates in the day-to day operations of the garage; removes, replaces, repairs fuel pumps, alternators, starters, and

other mechanical parts; replaces and adjusts headlights; installs and repairs accessories; relines and adjust brakes;

replaces shocks and suspension systems; repairs or replaces radiators; repairs or replaces exhaust systems and

components and replaces batteries.

Assist with repairs to vehicles and equipment; researches manuals for solutions to problems when needed.

Writes preventive maintenance and repair orders; performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Locates and acquires needed parts at best prices.

Keeps up with new technical information and procedures.

Repair, change and balance tires.

Cleans and washes vehicles and equipment.

Maintains grounds, mows grass and trims trees.

Paints buildings and tanks.

Makes random safety checks of yard and facility equipment.

Ensures tools and shop equipment are in good working order.

Maintains vehicle spare parts inventory.

Maintains records of all vehicles’ mileage and preventive maintenance status; maintains and files general shop records.

Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; enters repair order information.

Receives various forms, reports, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as

appropriate.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work

activities, exchange information, or resolve problems.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain and keep records for fuel storage tanks.

Maintains cleanliness of shop and restrooms.

Maintains a safe working environment in shop area.

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Vocational/Technical degree with training emphasis in mechanics; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience

and/or training involving vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education,

training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be able to operate

and use computers with various software applications. Must obtain and maintain a Florida Commercial Class A Driver’s

License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) within one (1) year of hire date. This position is subject to random

drug/alcohol testing as required under the Federal Department of Transportation’s Random Testing of CDL drivers.

Must be able to communicate and comprehend the English language.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in

relation to these computational operations. Requires ability to use and operate computer for data entry, extraction,

modification or updating.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the

application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of

equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Requires knowledge of

hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability

to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in

written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and

standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a

variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on

climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling,

and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may

occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds,

odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. All tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions,

such as dirt, dust, wetness, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, operating machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards

and toxic agents.
