Job description

Do you love turning complex research and analysis into tight, engaging copy? Do you want to help journalists and others understand more about energy and climate change?

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is a non-profit organisation aiming to support informed debate on energy and climate change issues in the UK.

We’re looking for an experienced freelance writer and editor with strong media nous to support our work by producing and editing outstanding copy.

We’re keen to diversify the voices and perspectives in our immediate and wider team, helping open up the sector we work with to become more inclusive and diverse – so we especially welcome applications from people from under-represented backgrounds who have the skills and experience the role calls for.

You’ll be responsible for writing and editing a range of communications content, including reports, briefings, blogs, op-eds, and web copy. You’ll work directly with expert analysts and programme leads to ask the right questions and work out how to take their research and turn it into engaging, clear and accurate content.

We’re looking for someone with a strong strategic mind. Much of the writing you’ll do will be targeted at a politically-interested audience, so political nous will be a big advantage. In this context, that means being familiar with different agendas and language used across the UK political spectrum.

This is a freelance or contract role for 1 to 2 days a week. The contract is initially expected to be one year’s duration, subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period, at £275-£350 per day, depending on experience.

Essential skills and experience

  • Professional writing experience in journalism or communications
  • Exceptional ability to identify the most important parts of complex research or analysis and produce accurate, clear writing to communicate it
  • Experience writing to short deadlines and managing multiple pieces of work independently
  • Strategic approach to writing, with the ability to direct content towards a set of objectives and key messages
  • Understanding of key challenges and opportunities associated with the net zero transition
  • Understanding of UK political landscape, and the ability to anticipate how different ideas and language will be received by a range of actors across the political spectrum
  • Ability to leave your own opinions and biases out of your writing
  • Collaborative working style: skilled at giving and receiving feedback, able to constructively challenge others, and willing to share work before it’s ‘perfect’

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience writing content for elite audiences
  • Experience working with an organisation, client or issue with a rapidly changing external context
  • Experience writing op-eds and blogs, including ghostwriting
  • Knowledge and experience of climate and energy issues in the UK and beyond

Job Types: Part-time, Fixed term contract, Freelance
Contract length: 12 months
Part-time hours: 14 per week

Salary: £275.00-£350.00 per day

Benefits:

  • Work from home

Experience:

  • Copywriting: 3 years (required)
