Under the direct and indirect supervision of the Program Director, the Flight Associate assists students in the Professional Pilot Technology Program to develop all aspects of flight instruction by applying theory to practice. The Aviation Flight Associate links the didactic portion of learning for students to a variety of settings using methods that include textbook education, simulators and live flight training, report on student progress, and work with students on how to handle emergencies. This is accomplished in a variety of ways including but not limited to classroom setting, conducting training flights, aircraft and cockpit operations, determining student proficiency, and reporting on student progress.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in standardized training for the Private pilot course using the aviation the equipment for instruction; maintain flight proficiency for the course that is instructed; adhere to all FAA regulations and departmental policies and procedures, researches new and improved teaching techniques.
  • Develop diverse professional skills by enhancing critical thinking and decision making skills necessary for safe and effective flying.
  • Operate as a crew member.
  • Ensure that all training activities, flights and briefings are conducted in accordance with FAA regulations and parameters.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty and administration.
  • Clearly communicate expectations to students. Meet with each student per established schedule; ensure that all flight lessons are completed according to established milestones and Stage Checks. Ensure that all flight lessons are completed according to Curriculum Course Outline; ensure that all appropriate endorsements are made in the student's flight book and personal logbook.
  • Identify educational, policy and procedure resources for students in the Aviation Program.
  • Supervise student during practice and demonstrations of basic flight maneuvers and takeoffs and landings under the guise of safety at all times.
  • Resolve complex situations as they arise in the field or training setting.
  • Keep abreast of current developments and trends in higher education.


Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Flight Instructor - Airplane (CFI) required; CFII/MEI certificate preferred; currently enrolled or ability to be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, with bachelor's degree preferred. Must hold a current second-class medical certificate. Knowledge of higher education and administration principles, practices and procedures helpful.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and instructor certification required.
  • Knowledge of various flight instruction instrumentation and equipment essential.
  • Ability to instruct/teach/tutor/mentor.
  • Ability to approach problems and decisions analytically.
  • Ability to reason logically and methodically.
  • Attention to detail critical.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, peers, administrators, the Vermont Technical College Chief Flight Instructor, the FAA, and government agencies.
  • Ability to appropriately critique student performances.
  • Excellent administrative, planning, writing and organizational skills.

VSC Non-Bargaining Unit Grade: 12 FLSA: Exempt Part-time, up to 25 hours per week, $25/hour
