General Description

Under general supervision of a Company Officer or Senior Firefighter, responds to emergency scenes and performs firefighting and basic life support emergency medical assistance duties. An employee in this position is responsible to perform job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect the health and safety of the citizens and members of the Fire Department.

This ia an IAFF, Local 3472 position.

Essential Functions

The information contained in this employment posting is a representative sample of functions performed in this job classification. Specific essential functions are identified for position recruitment or other administrative procedures.

  • Perform fire fighting activities including but not limited to, extinguishing fires, searching burning buildings, rescuing and assisting victims from emergency sites, driving fire apparatus, operating fire pumps and related equipment, laying hose, climbing ladders, and using Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
  • Assess fires and other emergency situations; report conditions to others.
  • Perform salvage operations such as evacuating water; removing debris and performing general clean up at the scene.
  • Perform emergency medical activities including but not limited to, Basic Life Support (BLS) assessment and treatment of medical and/or trauma adult and pediatric patients.
  • Perform BLS medical procedures as required by the Oakland County Medical Program.
  • Participate in training and maintain acceptable medical and fire fighting skill levels.
  • Enter Fire and EMS data on computer.
  • Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other fire prevention programs.
  • Maintain fire equipment, buildings and apparatus, including performing minor repairs to Department properties and clean and test equipment.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties at the fire station
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with others including City staff, hospital and other emergency personnel, and members of the public.
  • Ensure and comply with safe working standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications/Desirable Qualifications

To be accepted for testing, an applicant must possess the following:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Michigan Firefighter Training Council Firefighter I and II
  • Current State of Michigan Licensure or National Registry certification as EMT- Basic
  • Current American Heart Association CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Certification
  • Satisfactory exam score on file with EMPCO (http://www.empco.net/)
  • Valid Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) card/certificate or Oakland Community College Fire Physical Agility Test card/certificate within the last year (at the time of job offer).
  • Valid Driver's license with satisfactory driving record including no more than 4 points on record
  • Satisfactory criminal history as determined by the City of Rochester Hills
  • Must obtain Paramedic licensure with the State of Michigan within three (3) years of completion of new hire academy (course is City paid).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates Degree in Fire Science or Emergency Medical Service.
  • Michigan Firefighter Training Council Emergency Vehicle Driver Training Certification..
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • One year experience as a EMT or Paramedic in a similar system.
  • One year experience as a Firefighter in a similar system.
  • Michigan Firefighter Training Council Incident Command Certification

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and lifting of persons or objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds, and moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access. Also requires physical mobility, dexterity, full range of motion and normal sensory abilities including vision, hearing, touch and smell. Operates emergency vehicles in all weather and lighting conditions required.

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those encountered while performing essential functions of this job classification. While performing the functions of this job, employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, fire, risk of electrical shock, hazardous materials and risk of vibration. The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life threatening situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a full range of safety and other precautions.
