Job Summary

The Service Engineer role is the technical service leader who performs and leads MRO in the field. This role will work independently, or in a team, carry out maintenance, repair work, troubleshooting and installation of different types of diesel engines and related equipment in the field or in a shop environment. Responsible for customer service internally and externally. Professional responsibility in delivering all tasks assigned to the company standard.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and preparing job scope, personal hand tools, special OEM tools, consumables and materials.
  • Addressing complaints, resolving problems and completing work scopes on-site/onboard.
  • Troubleshooting, Overhauling, Repairing 2 and/or 4-stroke Diesel engines and systems.
  • Troubleshooting auxiliary systems and component including electronic engine monitoring and controls.
  • Creating correct parts orders according to OEM standards.
  • Managing the workflow and economics during field jobs, including showing flexibility on the job site when there are changes in work scope.
  • All jobs must be documented in detailed reports with all measurements and activities include.
  • Must report the work scope documentation in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and MSHS-ISO standards.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures for electrical and mechanical engineers.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Works under immediate supervision.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications and programs required for work performance and internet usage.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of rigging equipment in tight engine room spaces.
  • Must be analytical, reliable and be able to work independently or in small teams.

  • Must be able to travel on short notice and be in the field for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to obtain TWIC, Huet, and other clearances/certificates required by US Gov’t, Offshore Companies, and/or Ports.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering and at least 3 years in the field experience or five/plus years related experience; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 0-5+ years’ experience in the repair, reconditioning, overhauling, installation and troubleshooting of diesel engines and related machineries.
  • Experience with the following a major plus: MAK, EMD, ALCO, Mitsui, Daihatsu, Hyundai, Fairbanks Morse, Wartsila, MAN, STX, MTU


Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to stand for long periods and be comfortable with kneeling, stooping and working in cramped and uncomfortable positions is required.
  • Should be prepared to twist and turn the body often and must be open to working outdoors in various weather conditions.


Fit for Duty

All field and shop employees will require a pre-employment ENG1 Medical Examination (or equivalent). Field service employees will be required to pass the ENG1 Medical Evaluation (or equivalent). The ENG1 Medical assessment is a standard examination can take anywhere between 30 and 45 minutes and will include the following:

  • Measurement of height and weight
  • A standard eye test and color blindness test
  • A hearing test
  • Ear and throat evaluations
  • Inspection of teeth and gums
  • Questions about medical history, including drinking and smoking habits
  • A urine sample to test kidney function and blood sugar levels
  • Reflex and hernia testing
  • Listening to heart and lungs, testing blood pressure and heart rate
