JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Qualifications:


  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing recognized by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Possess a Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing.
  • Certification as a Registered Nurse Practitioner recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Alabama Board on Nursing.

Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, and ambulate effectively throughout the day in the course of meeting the job requirements.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must possess sight and hearing senses or the use of prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately in order for the requirements of the position to be fully met.
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress in order to set a proper example.
  • Must be able to work extended hours if necessary to meet the requirements of the clinic hours or patient demand.
  • Must possess adequate physical and mental stamina to work rapidly and efficiently.
  • Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with different personnel and agencies.
  • Must possess adequate motor skill and is able to handle and manipulate patients, supplies, and equipment.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Use proper technique in patient assessment and care, always following the established policies and procedures of the Rural Health Clinic and the Tombigbee Healthcare Authority
  • Duties of the nurse practitioner may be performed wherever the physician regularly sees patients.
  • The nurse practitioner may work autonomously under the supervising physician by telephone or other communications methods for consultation, findings, recommendations, and assistance.
  • The supervising physician will provide appropriate supervision and will be ultimately responsible for all duties delegated to the Mid-Level practitioner.
  • The Mid-Level practitioner may gather data base on all new patients or established patients with new problems to include a complete physical examination and medical history, medical record review, appropriate initial diagnostic studies, and will be responsible for recording all findings to the medical record and patient before final diagnosis is made and treatment is instituted.
  • The nurse practitioner may perform those invasive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures as outlined in Mid-level protocols provided in the clinic setting, e.g.:
    • patient history
    • routine physical examination
    • order and perform routine office laboratory work such as
    • urinalysis and blood workups
    • venous punctures
    • suture small superficial lacerations
    • apply splints to stabilize suspected fractures
    • fulgurate simple cutaneous horns and other minor skin lesions
    • enter admission orders and subsequent orders when directed by the physician and validated by the physician within 24 hours.
  • The nurse practitioner may administer injectable and intravenous drugs specifically directed to do so by the
  • supervising physician.
  • The nurse practitioner may prescribe legend drugs to patients, subject to the following condition:
  • The drug type, dosage, quantity prescribed, and number of refills, and the route of administration.
  • A nurse practitioner may not initiate a call-in prescription in the name of the supervising physician for any drug, legend or controlled substance, which the assistant is not authorized to prescribe under the approved drug list signed by the supervising physician, unless the drug is specifically ordered for the patient by the physician either in writing or by verbal order which has been reduced to writing and which has been signed by the physician.
  • The nurse practitioner will instruct and counsel patients and their families with regard to their illness or injury, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens, normal growth development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance. He may also facilitate referral of patients to other medical providers, medical facilities, or other health/social agencies when appropriate as per delegation of the supervising physician.
  • The nurse practitioner may initiate appropriate evaluation and treatment in emergency life threatening situations if the supervising physician is not present.
  • The nurse practitioner shall not perform lumbar punctures, thoracenteses, paracenteses, joint aspirations or injections of a joint, insertion of a Swan-Ganz catheter, and reduction of a fracture, removal of a foreign body from the eye or ear, and any invasive procedure with involvement deeper than the complete dermis.
  • The nurse practitioner shall at all times properly identify themselves as a nurse practitioner and shall at all times wear a clearly legible identification name tag with the words "Nurse Practitioner."
  • The physician and the nurse practitioner are expected to understand and comply with all current laws, rules, and regulations which govern the practice of nurse practitioners in the state of Alabama.
  • The nurse practitioner shall comply with all policies and procedures and practices applicable to an employee of the Tombigbee Healthcare Authority.
  • The nurse practitioner must be able to deliver diagnostic and therapeutic measures to all age-specific groups: neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
