This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at the
Bonneville Hatchery
in Cascade Locks, OR.

What you will do:
This position will provide support for the work unit in a technical manner by caring for fish through the complete hatchery cycle and performing maintenance on grounds and equipment as well as other duties within a fish hatchery environment to achieve assigned management goals. Duties include:

  • Inspect buildings, fixtures, vehicles and equipment for service requirements. Perform preventative and unscheduled maintenance as needed. Respond to emergencies or unscheduled problems as they arise.
  • Perform activities requiring installation, replacement and/or modification of equipment and facilities. Perform general painting and carpentry. Install or repair fixtures. Make minor repairs and mechanical adjustments on station operating equipment.
  • Fabricate specialized equipment as directed by supervisor. Maintain accurate equipment maintenance records. Keep abreast of changes in technology through attending professional meetings. Keep current by reading memos, guidelines, policies, reports and other documents.
  • Maintenance of hatchery wells and associated water delivery system: Performs daily inspections and records data reading of water levels, amperes, water flows and temperatures. Works in cooperation with the COE well maintenance staff.

Working Conditions

  • Must frequently work during inclement weather and the resulting extremes of heat and cold. Must occasionally work in or neat cold, deep, or fast moving water for extended periods of time. Must occasionally apply chemicals used in the treatment of fish or disinfection of fish culture equipment, as well as herbicides, fertilizers and insecticides. Occasionally work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance activities. Occasionally work long hours during spawning and egg incubation seasons. May occasionally be exposed to high noise environments from equipment and vehicles. May occasionally work alone for extended periods and respond to emergencies while working alone. Display good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.
  • The employee in this position is required to live on station unless housing is not available. The employee in this position is required to live on station and to work on an on-call basis as assigned. When performing on-call duty, the employee must remain on hatchery grounds and within hearing and proper response distance to hatchery alarms to minimize risk to hatchery resources; however, the employee is not confined to specific hatchery facilities, and may use on-call duty time effectively for personal purposes provided the employee remains unimpaired to effectively respond to alarm notifications. Although there is no “fixed” time for response, response time should be 15 to 30 minutes or less, dependent on hatchery conditions. The employee’s presence on hatchery grounds is also necessary as a means of enhancing security for the hatchery facility as a whole. When conditions allow (during periods of non-critical conditions) on call employees may leave hatchery grounds for the purpose of making any reasonable trip within the 15 to 30 minutes response window. Employees should be allowed sufficient flexibility while on call and in conjunction with the hatchery manager may discuss timeframes allowed. It is recognized each situation is unique and can be handled on a case by case basis.
  • The duties of this position may include the use of a SPOTS card for work related purchases as a benefit to the agency. Prior to being issued a SPOTS card the employee must meet all necessary requirements in accordance with ODFW Policy ASD_250_03-SPOTS, including completing ODFW SPOTS card training. Continued eligibility to possess and use a SPOTS card requires that the holder remain in full compliance with ODFW Policy ASD_250_03-SPOTS. The successful candidate will be subject to criminal history background check with fingerprinting and will be subject to annual checks during employment.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of general building maintenance, carpentry, mechanical, or electrical experience.

A journeyman’s license/card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience. Be sure a copy of your journeyman’s license/card is attached to your application to receive credit for this experience. Please attach under the resume/cover letter section.
