Overview:

The Environment, Safety, and Health Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the Senior Accelerator Facility Safety Engineer position within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division.


ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. ORNL operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator facility, a one-of-a-kind research facility that provides the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. The Second Target Station (STS), a > $1 billion Department of Energy project, to be constructed at the SNS will provide entirely new capabilities for studying a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry and will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.


The ORNL Accelerator Safety Program is conducted in accordance with DOE Order 420.2D Safety of Accelerator Facilities. The Senior Accelerator Facility Safety Engineer provides accelerator safety support for the SNS including major facility upgrades, with the potential to provide future support for the STS.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs, documents, and maintains technical safety analyses supporting new and existing ORNL accelerator facilities, major accelerator upgrade projects and facility modifications.
  • Maintains accelerator safety documentation including Safety Assessment Documents and Accelerator Safety Envelopes, revising, and updating as needed while ensuring compliance with associated requirements.
  • Implements the SNS Unreviewed Safety Issue Process to evaluate proposed facility modifications, new activities or discovered conditions to determine if associated accelerator related hazards are appropriately addressed by existing safety analysis.
  • Provides accelerator facility safety support as needed and in response to emerging issues to support safe operations and in support of mission needs including minimization of operational downtime due to accelerator safety related issues.
  • Coordinates with facility operations staff, scientist and local DOE Site Office to assist in the development and implementation of safety bases, analysis of policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Provides accelerator safety related training to System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
  • Maintains effective communications and interface with System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
  • Provides safety analysis support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with accelerator test facilities and other facilities operated under exemption from DOE O 420.2D.
  • Evaluates modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs, etc.
  • Provides technical training for ORNL staff in accelerator safety analysis development, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Rigorously maintains documentation and records in approved document management system.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Nuclear Engineering or engineering or science degree in related discipline.
  • Eight or more years relevant operations or technical support experience at a DOE accelerator facility, nuclear navy, or other facility exercising a commensurate level of operational rigor.
  • Understanding and ability to apply basic radiological safety and health physics principals including shielding and radiological dose assessments.
  • Understanding and ability to apply basic engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply hazard/safety analysis techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to author technical documents.
  • Proficient in application of standard workplace personal computer applications.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-graduate degree in Nuclear Engineering or in a related scientific discipline.
  • Accelerator safety related experience at DOE accelerator facility with demonstrated familiarity with DOE accelerator safety requirements.
  • Significant experience in application of shielding and radiological dose assessments.
  • Significant experience in performing hazard/safety analyses.
  • Basic understanding of radiation and/or neutron transport.
  • Nuclear Navy Experience
