The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly own a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

Job Description

The Naval Training and Simulation (NTS) department at Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) designs, develops, deploys, and maintains training simulators for the US Navy at training sites across the US. The NTS Electrical/Computer Engineer will work on software applications and computing architectures hosting real-time software models that emulate shipboard embedded control systems and electrical components for new and existing simulators. Through this work, the engineer will gain a valuable understanding of the operation of various Navy propulsion, electrical, and control systems via research and design, implementation, and hands-on testing of several simulator systems used to train Naval Nuclear Operators on current and future Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program ship classes.


The successful candidate will work in an agile, team-oriented environment to develop these software architectures, systems and engineering models. As an experienced engineer, you will apply your knowledge, creativity, and software design, implementation, and troubleshooting skills daily. Experienced engineers also provide training and mentoring to teammates and lead significant efforts. Cognizant areas may include researching, planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, testing, presenting, and leading these engineering solutions.


Skills we are looking for:

  • High proficiency in C and C++ with 5+ years of experience in application development
  • Systems/board-level software development, troubleshooting, and debugging experience
  • Experienced in multiple languages (Python, Java, C#) and environments (Windows and Linux)
  • Experienced with integrated development environments (MS Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.)
  • Experienced with version controlling, documenting and packaging in large-scale code bases

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only) or SRE qualified and six years of experience

Preferred Skills

  • Computer/Software Engineering degree with a minimum 3.2/4.0 GPA
  • Knowledge and experience in embedded systems, microprocessors, and controllers
  • Knowledge and experience in software and protocols for various I/O interfaces
  • Experience in distributed processing, inter-process communication and synchronization
  • Experience with real-time engineering model development, preferably for simulation
  • Experience working with hardware and firmware engineers to design embedded systems
  • Ability to understand electronics and software diagrams and electrical schematics
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and assimilate knowledge rapidly
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Experience leading and facilitating teams in an Agile organization
  • Demonstrated action-oriented “can-do” attitude that shows initiative and ownership
