Job description

We are seeking a skilled, motivated, and detailed oriented estimator to join our growing team. In this position, you will be responsible for performing detailed takeoffs, estimating labor and materials costs, and working closely with vendors and Construction team members. If you are detail oriented, analytical, and able to collaboratively work with stakeholders to successfully execute a project, Amherst is looking for you! This position reports to the Director, Procurement – Homebuilding. Other tasks you will work on include but are not limited to:

  • Analyzing blueprints, construction drawings, and other documentation to prepare cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Perform field walks, material delivery confirmations, and the correct utilization of material as intended.
  • Collaboratively working with engineers, designers, stakeholders, contractors, and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Participate in value engineering meetings.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates & bills of material (BOM) for home designs.
  • Demonstrate a can-do attitude, ensuring all stakeholders are engaged and aligned to the program goals.
  • Maintain thorough records of all project documentation, including estimates, receipts, and project completion documentation.
  • Gather and analyze proposals, blueprints, specifications, and related documents.
  • Use a variety of programs for data analysis, forecasting, and budgeting of projects.
  • Conduct quantity takeoffs for all trades in the assigned timeframe to meet the overall project timeline.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BSC/BBA in engineering, construction management, statistics, or relevant discipline
  • 3+ years of experience working as an estimator with a demonstrated ability to successfully estimate plan sets
  • Proficiency in mathematics, statistics, and data analysis
  • Knowledge of or ability to understand symbols, terminology, and accepted standards used in engineering drawings, shop drawings, industry standards, and Government solicitations
  • Experience in single-family homebuilding or other residential construction is beneficial
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Ability to collaborate and quickly build relationships with cross-functional teams
  • Comfortable working on tight timelines in a start-up like environment
  • Excellent written communication, interpersonal, and time management skills
  • While the above qualifications are preferred, they are not required. An individual with advanced problem-solving skills, a strong sense of ownership, and an ability to work autonomously would have a strong foundation in which to become a successful Estimator
