Job Duties

In this position you will diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and
mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.

Standard Duties for Job:
  • Safety: VDOT employees are expected to routinely demonstrate safety behaviors as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities. Manages area(s) of responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Demonstrates and routinely practices safety behaviors as a condition of employment. Reports all safety accidents, incidents and/or concerns appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Essential Emergency Operations: As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. As such, this job is essential to emergency response operations and expected to work in these situations. Report to work when called. Maintain communications with supervisor. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Be prepared to operate appropriate equipment in all kinds of weather.

Core Responsibilities for Job and Position:
  • Virginia State Inspections:
Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment. Diagnosis and Repair Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on- line resources. Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
  • Information Processing and Paperwork: Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete and close-out work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.
  • Preventive Maintenance:
Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment or assets according to PM schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing.
  • Emergency Operations: Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs.
  • Welding Repair and Fabrication: Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.
  • Perform Repair Work: Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes.

Required Skills
  • Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of general shop procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
  • Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to coach and instruct others in diagnostic and repair techniques and in the operation of equipment.

Qualifications:
Education Level:
  • High school diploma or GED with vocational or technical training in equipment repair and diagnostics preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
  • Vocational or technical training in automotive and equipment repair and diagnostics preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Experience Level:
  • Experience in repairing and maintaining a variety of equipment.
  • Experience in repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.

  • Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASE certifications.
  • Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense.
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of
their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure
and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
(FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to
obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test
to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-
Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or
endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist
with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition
tenure and repayment agreement.
