Job description

DUTIES: Knowledge of the general practices, tools, techniques, and materials used in transfer station operations. General knowledge of and ability to comprehend training related to EPA rules and compliance for transfer and solid waste facilities. Skill in operating light, medium and heavy equipment. Knowledge of hazardous waste warning signs, ability to identify suspicious materials, knowledge, and ability to comprehend training related to OSHA standards, particularly standards related to working with solid waste and potentially dangerous substances. Knowledge of good and safe work practices related to the use of light, medium and heavy equipment. Ability to recognize and salvage recyclable and other valuable materials that may be a part of the solid waste stream. Ability to perform routine preventive maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy equipment or other repairs necessary to the transfer station and its facilities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor including, but not limited to, sorting through trash, lifting heavy objects (up to 100 lbs.), directing the hauling or moving of materials throughout the tipping floors. Skills in interpersonal relations in order to deal effectively with the public and with other District employees. Responsible for the completion of routine maintenance and other construction projects as assigned using a variety of hand tools and equipment. Exercise sound and good judgment at all times and when operating equipment, especially in emergency situations. Ability to use discretion within established guidelines. Must be able to resolve problems related to routine and preventive maintenance. Deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and professional manner.

Must report to work in a timely way when assigned by Shift Supervisors and when scheduled by the District.

Communicate in a concise and effective manner. Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires graduation from high school or GED, three (3) years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of job-related education, training or experience. Must possess a Utah Driver=s License and any other certifications necessary and required by the District policies and the State of Utah.
