Job description

The Equipment Operator Trainer supports the achievement of facility goals and objectives by ensuring associates are effectively trained and prepared to execute job responsibilities. The Trainer provides classroom and hands-on instruction that meets Harbor Freight Tools Vehicle Operations Program (VOP) and OSHA/CAL-OSHA requirements on the safe operation of all powered industrial equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates effective training ability so to enable participants to fully understand and are capable of performing all job requirements without error. Qualified trainer will possess a certificate to train and evaluate powered industrial truck operators.
  • Conducts classroom portion of Powered Industrial Equipment training program, which includes: videos teaching forklift operation and safety, discussing different principles and terminology presented in the videos, and reviewing material that will be on the written certification exam.
  • Administers approved, written certification exam with associates during the classroom portion of the training. Grades exams and reviews results with the associates.
  • Provides hands-on instruction, to include: visual and operational inspection, how to use controls and gauges on the forklift, safe hookup on a charger, driving forward and in reverse, slalom skills, moving and double-stacking freight, put and letdown of pallet in pallet rack system, and an overview of the iWarehouse fleet management system.
  • Conducts Warehouse Management System (WMS) training with the associate to complete the certification process.
  • Keeps track of associate attendance and promptness using sign-in sheets.
  • Reports any associate issues immediately to the Training, Safety and/or the Human Resource Managers as appropriate.
  • Conducts driving skills test for each associate. Trainer will evaluate the associate on driving skill and safety using the equipment operation evaluation forms.
  • Reviews results of the hands-on evaluations with associate and Manager. Advises associates in the areas of the evaluation on which they require additional training.
  • Monitors the associate’s performance and operation of the equipment during the associate’s first 30 days of certification.
  • Provides updates and reports to the Training Manager as specified.
  • In partnership with Training Manager, may collaborate with management to determine additional equipment training needs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Scope
  • Staff supervision and Development – No direct reports or development requirements
  • Decision Making – Assists in policy development and problem resolution, provides data/information for decision support, acts as subject matter expert while providing advice and direction.
  • Travel – Up to 15% local and domestic travel
  • Location – Distribution Center

Requirements

Job Qualifications – Education and Experience
  • Certified Powered Industrial Equipment Trainer
  • Ability to work with a group of associates who are at different skill levels
  • Ability to relate classroom training to what is expected in a real, working environment
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Basic reading, writing and math skills; organized and possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours/shifts and maintain good attendance
  • Preferred Work Keys score level for the Operations Coordinator role
  • Preferred technical trainer certification and/or experience
  • Preferred familiarity with the different types of material handling equipment in the facility
  • Preferred bi-lingual English/Spanish

Physical Requirements
Warehouse environment requiring ability to:
  • Stand/walk up to 10 hours with scheduled breaks
  • Work in a multi-level environment, including climbing stairs, bending, twisting, stepping, stooping, reaching, lifting and pushing on a frequent basis
  • Able to get on/off the forklift safely and properly

The candidate must be able to perform this job safely in accordance with standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices, without endangering the health or safety of self or others.

The anticipated rate for this position is $23.50 per hour depending on location, knowledge, skills, education and experience. In addition, we offer comprehensive and competitive benefits to Associates (and their families) such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability. Eligible Associates are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan. Associates will accrue paid time off up to 120 hours per year, including 56 hours of Floating Holidays and paid sick time up to 64 hours per year unless otherwise required by law. The Company observes two (2) Company paid holidays.
