The Emory University Environmental, Health, and Safety Office (EHSO) is seeking a team member to serve in our Radiation Safety unit. EHSO’s vision is a partnership with the Emory community that integrates sound environmental, health, and safety management practices in all aspects of Emory’s operations to enhance and support its world-renowned research, inquiry-driven teaching, and the delivery of premier healthcare.
The Environmental Professional II (EHS II) position serves as a staff specialist providing support to the Radiation Safety team with a focus on regulatory compliance and value-added services to Emory University and Emory Healthcare. The preferred candidate will possess a working knowledge of radiation protection regulations, as well as other relevant codes and regulations.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Under general supervision, monitors, controls, inspects, contains or removes hazardous material (biological, chemical, radioactive or other).
- Provides support to ensure compliance with applicable standards, laws and regulations. Performs surveys and routine safety inspections in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety or industrial hygiene.
- May participate in project management to facilitate laboratory moves and abatement projects, including coordination with vendors, contractors and internal clients.
- Maintains storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment related to EHS programs.
- Participates in training for program areas.
- Responds to internal clients regarding chemical, biosafety, radiation safety and industrial hygiene concerns.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUDIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
- Maintain working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
- Participate in educational meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and prevention of incidents.
- Use portable and laboratory health physics instrumentation.
- Perform documented contamination surveys, sealed source inventories and leak tests.
- Segregate and process radioactive waste.
- Complete radioactive package receipt inspections.
- Assign and distribute dosimeters.
- Perform other related duties as required.
THE PREFERRED APPLICANT CAN:
- Author scientific reports and communications to affected workers and management regarding workplace hazards, exposures, and health risks.
- Work with radioactive materials, both sealed and unsealed, and/or radiation producing machines.
- Prepare inpatient radiotherapy rooms (using Lu-177, I-131, Tc-99m, etc.).
- Respond appropriately to radioactive material spills and decontaminate facilities.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate radiation safety hazards.
- Perform inspections of clinical and research laboratories using radioactive material, radiation producing machines, or lasers.
- Effectively communicate with therapy patients and clinical staff.
- Maintain radioactive material authorizations and/or specific license amendments.
- Conduct radiation safety training.
- Prepare radioactive packages for shipment.
- Prepare reports for radiation safety committees.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
- Second shift work required weekly.
- Work in an operational setting involving lifting, walking, and respirator use.
- Driving Emory vehicles to perform regular activities (must be licensed to drive in Georgia).
- Contact with patients and research subjects including patient information.
- Occasional weekend duty.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors plus 3 years experience in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e. chemistry) is required.
- Professional Board Certification desired: (Examples include: CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional).
- Equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.
